Company's 49th season opens with one of the most popular operas of all time
Madison Opera presents Georges Bizet's Carmen Nov. 6 at 8 p.m. and Nov. 8 at 2:30 p.m. in Overture Hall. Director/choreographer Candace Evans and Maestro John DeMain lead an international cast, the Madison Opera Chorus, Madison Symphony Orchestra, Madison Youth Choirs and Tania Tandias Flamenco Dancers in what is sure to be a spectacular opening to the 2009/2010 Season.
"Carmen sets the perfect tone for our new season," says Madison Opera General Director Allan Naplan. "It's a thrilling dramatic work with beautiful music everyone will recognize, and our production is sure to please. >From principal singers to jugglers to our stage crew, Madison Opera has employed 238 people to bring Bizet's masterpiece to life on the grand scale it was written for."
Mezzo-soprano Katharine Goeldner stars as the seductive gypsy Carmen. Opera News raves, "Goeldner's Carmen has been widely praised, and it's easy to see why. She's a delectable creation: sexy and intelligent, alive to musical and dramatic detail." Recently seen in Madison Opera's Opera in the Park 2009, rising-star Adam Diegel sings opposite Goeldner as the soldier Don Jose, with Korean baritone Hyung Yun (Faust, 2009) as Escamillo and Cuban-American soprano Elizabeth Caballero as Micaëla. Coming off of critically acclaimed productions for the Dallas Opera, director/choreographer and Madison-native Candace Evans makes her company debut with Carmen. Conductor John DeMain returns for his first Madison Opera production since The Tender Land in 2008.
In addition to Carmen performances, Madison Opera presents Opera Up Close: The Carmen Preview on Sunday, Nov. 1, 4 - 6 p.m. in the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art Lecture Hall.

Katharine Goeldner - Carmen
Mezzo-soprano Katharine Goeldner recently earned unanimous raves for her triumphant run at New York City Opera as Erika in Barber's Vanessa. Of her 2003 Carmen at New York City Opera, Opera News wrote "she has been widely praised, and it's easy to see why. She's a delectable creation: sexy and intelligent, alive to musical and dramatic detail." Ms. Goeldner has also performed at the Metropolitan Opera, Opéra National de Lyon, Teatro Real Madrid, and the Salzburg Festival. In concert, she has appeared with the Mozarteum Orchestra, the Bruckner Orchester, the Vienna Symphony, the Berlin Symphony, and the Munich Radio Orchestra. Recent season appearances include Dorabella in Cosi fan tutte at the Santa Fe Opera and Fenena in Nabucco at Dallas Opera. Ms. Goeldner's 2008/2009 season included a return to her signature role of Strauss' Composer in a production at Salzburg's Festspielhaus and her Chicago Lyric Opera debut as Suzuki in Madama Butterfly.
Adam Diegel - Don Jose
Tenor Adam Diegel is quickly gaining notoriety as a young talent on the rise. Most recently Mr. Diegel made his European debut as Maurizio in Adriana Lecouvreur. Engagements for 2009/2010 Season include Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly with the Savonlinna Opera Festival; a cover of Cavaradossi in Tosca with Lyric Opera of Chicago; Don Jose in Carmen with both Florida Grand Opera and Madison Opera; and Rodolfo in La bohème with both Opera Omaha and The Minnesota Opera. A graduate of Yale University, Mr. Diegel has performed in recent seasons with New York City Opera, Opera Company of North Carolina, Tulsa Opera, Fort Worth Opera, and Opera Memphis.
Elizabeth Caballero - Micaëla
Acclaimed by the San Francisco Chronicle as a "powerful diva in the making", Cuban-American soprano Elizabeth Caballero is becoming widely recognized for her fearless portrayals of the lyric soprano repertoire. She was recently praised by the New York Times for a "show-stopping performance." Recent season highlights for Ms. Caballero include Nedda in I Pagliacci and Musetta in La bohème at New York City Opera; Mimi in La bohème at Florida Grand Opera; Lisa in La sonnambula with the Opera Orchestra of New York at Carnegie Hall; Adina in L'elisir d'amore at San Antonio Opera; and Violetta in La traviata at New Jersey Opera Theater. Upcoming engagements include her mainstage debut at the Metropolitan Opera as Frasquita in a new production of Carmen.
Hyung Yun - Escamillo
Korean baritone Hyung Yun has established himself as a leading performer at the nation's top opera houses. He debuted at the Metropolitan Opera as Silvio in Pagliacci, followed by performances as Valentin in Faust and Lescaut in Manon with Renee Fleming. Recent engagements include Marcello in La Boheme with Tulsa Opera , LA Opera, and Washington National Opera; Lescaut in Manon at LA Opera with Rolando Villazon and Anna Netrebko; Angelotti in Tosca with LA Opera; Valentin in Faust with Palm Beach Opera; and Ping in Turandot with Sante Fe Opera. Yun is a former member of the prestigious Domingo-Cafitz Young Artist Program at Washington National Opera. He recently earned rave reviews as Valentin in Faust with Madison Opera.
Candace Evans - Stage Director/Choreograhper
Acclaimed as a director "with a flawless sense of timing" (Opera News), Candace Evans is known for the clarity of her story-telling, through the interplay of music, text, movement and the visual world of sets and costumes. A native of Madison, Wisconsin, Ms. Evans was trained as an opera singer and his since danced with the Wisconsin Ballet Company and earned a Master of Fine Arts in classical theatre. Known for her collaborative spirit, she has worked as a theatre artist for over twenty-five years, directing and choreographing over seventy operas, musicals, plays, and ballets. Ms. Evans currently serves as Acting and Movement Coach for the Dallas Opera Young Artists Program. Recent credits include critically acclaimed direction of The Merry Widow and choreography for Salome, La Rondine and Ariadne auf Naxos, all for the Dallas Opera.
John DeMain - Conductor
The 2009/2010 season marks John DeMain's 16th season with Madison Opera. In addition to his position as Madison Opera's Artistic Director, he serves as Music Director of the Madison Symphony Orchestra and is a regular guest conductor of the Washington National Opera, Los Angeles Opera, Michigan Opera Theater and New York City Opera. Recent engagements include Porgy and Bess with the Lyric Opera of Chicago and San Francisco Opera. During his distinguished 18-year tenure with Houston Grand Opera, Mr. DeMain conducted the premieres of such significant works as John Adams' Nixon in China and led a history-making production of Porgy and Bess that won him Grammy and Tony Awards. During the 2009/2010 season, Mr. DeMain will conduct Carmen, The Turn of the Screw, and The Flying Dutchman for Madison Opera, and he will travel to Vancouver Opera to conduct the Canadian premiere of Nixon in China for the 2010 Winter Olympics.
Founded in 1961, Madison Opera is committed to presenting professional opera of the highest quality and regularly features world-renowned guest artists in vocally and visually spectacular productions at the Overture Center for the Arts.
