Suzanne Beia is celebrating her 10th season as concertmaster of the WCO and second violinist in the Pro Arte Quartet. She also serves as assistant concertmaster of the Madison Symphony Orchestra. A native of Reno, Nevada, she began her musical studies on the viola at age 10. Three years later, she shifted her attention to the violin and made her solo debut at the age of 14 with the North Lake Tahoe Symphony.
Since that time, she has performed on numerous occasions as a soloist with orchestras throughout the United States and Germany. Before coming to Madison, Suzanne held the position of principal second violin in the Wichita Symphony, and she has held concertmaster positions with the Reno Chamber Orchestra, Bay Area Women's Philharmonic, Spoleto Festival Orchestra, and Chamber Symphony of San Francisco. She also held the Assistant Concertmaster position in the New World Symphony.
Leanne Kelso League teaches violin and viola at UW-Whitewater, where she
also performs as a soloist and chamber musician. Leanne is assistant concertmaster of the WCO and associate concertmaster of the Madison Symphony Orchestra. Her performance schedule has included chamber music and orchestral performances in Italy, Austria, Amsterdam, Costa Rica, and Slovenia, as well as many cities throughout North America.
From 1996 to 1999, she was a fellow at the New World Symphony in Miami, Florida, where she performed as concertmaster and principal second violin. She earned her master of music degree in performance from UW-Madison, studying with Vartan Manoogian and holding an assistantship in the Strelow String Quartet. Her undergraduate studies were completed at Florida State University and Eastman School of Music.
Karl Lavine is principal cellist for the WCO as well as the Madison Symphony Orchestra. He is also a member of the Milwaukee-based new music ensemble, Present Music. Karl has also appeared at John and Rose Mary Harbisonâ??s Token Creek Festival in Wisconsin. He has held faculty positions at Luther College and Illinois Wesleyan University and is currently teaching at a private studio in Madison.
As a member of the Present Music, Karl has recorded many recent compositions with the ensemble as well as solo repertoire. Recently he has formed the Kepler Quartet, a string quartet which resulted from performances of composer Ben Johnstonâ??s works. With the help of a generous grant from the Aaron Copland Recording Foundation, the Kepler Quartet recently released on New World Records the first of three discs devoted to the complete string quartets of Ben Johnston.
Frank Hanson has performed as principal trumpet of the WCO since 1984. A native of Stow, Ohio, and currently living in Whitewater, Frank is a professor of music at UW-Whitewater and principal trumpet of the Whitewater Brass Quintet. Frank also performs with the Madison Symphony Orchestra.
He has performed in solo roles with the WCO on a number of occasions in works by Shostakovich, Barber, Sallinen, Vivaldi, and others, and has performed at international conferences and music festivals in the United States, Scandinavia, and Europe. Before moving to Wisconsin, Frank performed with several symphony and chamber orchestras in Ohio. He holds doctoral and masters degrees in trumpet performance from Ohio State University.
