Prof renews psychology controversy on 11/05/09 at 9:00 am | Timothy Baker has a problem with psychology today. He thinks it bears a dangerous resemblance to the medicine of yesteryear: anecdotal, unscientific, as likely to hurt as help. "[D]espite compelling research support for the merits of specific interventions for specific problems, clinical psychology, as a field, has failed to embrace these treatments," writes Baker, a professor of medicine at the UW-Madison's School of Medicine and Public Health, in a paper that's generating national attention and controversy. |

Kathie Rasmussen Women's Theatre stages strong debut on 10/17/09 at 9:00 am | As debuts go, The Smart Women Project -- the first-ever production from the new Kathie Rasmussen Women's Theatre company -- is, well, awfully smart. The production's nine short plays run the gamut from sober realism to out-there experiments to frenetic zaniness, and while some work better than others, all of them work, and none talk down to the audience. |

Souvenir's soprano can't sing, but she thinks she can on 10/16/09 at 9:00 am | There was nothing pretty about Florence Foster Jenkins' singing. But there might be something beautiful about it. Foster Jenkins is one of the two characters in Madison Theatre Guild's Souvenir, which opened Oct. 14 at the Bartell Theatre. She's odd, compelling -- and utterly real. |

Little Fears is back from the dead on 09/25/09 at 9:00 am | Jason Blair helps put children in scary situations. And a lot of people love it. In fact, they can't wait for him to do it again. And he's about to. |

Forward Music Fest 2009 Saturday with Andrew Bird, Low, BLK JKS on 09/20/09 at 9:27 am | The relaxed, cool vibe differentiates Forward Music Festival from similar events like New York's annual CMJ showcase. |

Cool tin roofs: Metal roofing will last for centuries on 09/17/09 at 9:00 am | As eco-friendly materials go, aluminum is generally not what first springs to mind. But if your home's roof needs repair, and you want to do it in an earth-healthy way, metal may well be the way to go. |

Solid acting not enough to save Cat's Paw by Strollers Theatre on 09/11/09 at 10:22 am | The challenge with reviewing a show like Strollers Theatre's latest, Cat's Paw, which opened Thursday night at the Bartell, is that the actors, the director, and the crew have done an absolutely fine job. But the material itself is another story. |

In the Beginning by Mercury Players is a clever but flawed creation on 09/05/09 at 9:31 am | For a lot of us -- even those of us who deplore Christian fundamentalism -- the apparently never-ending argument over evolution versus creationism has become awfully tiresome. So the Mercury Players deserve credit for their latest show at the Bartell Theatre, In the Beginning, an imperfect but refreshing spin on How All of This Got Started. |

Are government agencies helping identity thieves get their hands on our personal information? on 08/28/09 at 9:00 am | Catching criminals is hard work, and no one believes every lawbreaker will be brought to earthly justice. But we don't expect our government to aid and abet felons. That, though, is exactly what local public-records and law enforcement agencies are doing -- often unwittingly and in the name of improved service -- says a Madison privacy and information security expert. |

Bawdy fun in Middleton Players Theatre's well-executed The Producers on 08/15/09 at 10:03 am | Did it feel like you were at a real Broadway show? Not quite -- the seats were more comfortable, the room felt bigger, and the set and costumes weren't so audaciously ornate. But you did get lost in the performance. |

Tearoom Tango is headed for New York on 08/07/09 at 9:00 am | Playwright Douglas Holtz isn't sure how to describe Tearoom Tango. The Mercury Players Theatre production returns to the stage Friday for four shows at the Bartell Theatre before a run later this month at New York City's International Fringe Festival. The play is part comedy, part drama -- funny and at the same time very dark, he says. Maybe the best way to describe it is "raw." |

Raucous Decemberists carry rock's banner at Overture Center on 08/06/09 at 10:05 am | Indie music came to the Overture Center last night -- sort of. Portland, Oregon's The Decemberists returned to Madison, playing a larger venue than they'd originally planned on, and in the process revealed themselves as shameless arena rockers. |

UW's carillonneur makes a big sound on 07/31/09 at 9:00 am | Lyle Anderson is your average street musician. Except that he plays in the snow and cold, and if his audience really wants to hear him, they should stand about 60 feet away. Oh, and his instrument weighs several tons. |
 |
Ed Schultz harangues for health care at Barrymore on 07/20/09 at 10:31 am | A cynic might call Ed Schultz a left-wing version of Rush Limbaugh. But although elements of the comparison ring true, Schultz's live radio broadcast from the Barrymore Theatre last night showed there are salient, if subtle, differences between the liberal commentator and his Republican counterparts. |

James DeVita shines in APT's smart In Acting Shakespeare on 07/16/09 at 9:55 am | In Acting Shakespeare is James DeVita's adaptation of Acting Shakespeare, a one-man show by Ian McKellen. American Players Theatre's DeVita isn't quite Sir Ian -- a luminary of both high and pop culture -- but he's as close to the mark as most of us mere mortals have any right to expect. |

StageQ's Riot Acts looks back at Stonewall on 07/10/09 at 9:00 am | "What I thought was going to be a fairly simple romp of a show," says director Tara Ayres, "has turned into something a lot more ambitious." The show, Riot Acts, is a two-act commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the June 1969 Stonewall riots in New York City -- generally considered the first gay-rights protests in American history. |

Forward Music Festival 2009 has Andrew Bird in hand, and Low as a high point on 06/30/09 at 4:06 pm | Madison music fans, get ready to raise the roof and dance your asses off -- or, OK, maybe just sway in place and clap occasionally -- following today's announcement of headliner Andrew Bird for the second annual Forward Music Fest. |
 |
Lounging Around by Broom Street Theater is pleasant but transient on 06/29/09 at 10:18 am | With Lounging Around, the folks at Broom Street Theater have achieved something remarkable: They've made the interminable wait for a delayed flight enjoyable, if not exhilarating. |

Cutting through the 'bullcrap' at the Glenn Beck 'Common Sense' simulcast on 06/05/09 at 8:24 am | Before the Glenn Beck "Common Sense" live simulcast at Point Cinemas started Thursday night, an ad ran proclaiming, "Tonight's attendance: sold out!" and thanking the audience for packing the house. Next it reminded us that a packed house could be a fire-safety hazard. Then it assured us that we probably weren't in danger, since the theater had been inspected... by the federal government. (Ba-dum-bump.) |
