Opa Cafe and Lounge brings something new to State Street
Opa is clearly trying to do something new on its block, bringing ingredients like duck confit and rabbit to a young audience who, though recently captivated by "real food" guru Michael Pollan, might be just as likely to pop into Qdoba. Opa aims high and for the most part succeeds.
jacs on the block
jacs, the new restaurant that opened in the spot where Monroe Street Bistro operated for only about a year, is in some ways not so new at all. Many of the minds involved with MSB are still a part of jacs, and much has been left unchanged. I felt resistant at first, because I liked Monroe Street Bistro. It had the best pommes frites in town, a generous cone of hot, crisp, peppery fries with a side of addictive aioli. Why change?
Magic coffee from Cafe Soleil
One of the best treats I had in the last few months was the "magic coffee" at Cafe Soleil. Like many things at Cafe Soleil, magic coffee is simple yet revelatory -- icy, sweet, spicy and creamy, the perfect summer drink. Yet magic coffee is available year-round, and it's the Cafe's biggest-selling cold drink by far.
Casa del Sol in Fitchburg marries innovation and faithful standards
There are restaurants you go to for a quick bite, and restaurants you to go for an ethereal, transcendent experience. Somewhere in between lie those restaurants that you can always count on to serve a reliably decent meal. It might be off once in a blue moon, it may even be great on occasion, but you almost always leave feeling satisfied. All of us have these old faithfuls in our dining lineup.
Madison's five best ice cream sundaes
It takes a special person -- someone selfless, really -- to sample a lot of sundaes for the benefit of the community. But enough about me. Readers of Isthmus, I ask you: What better way can there be to give thanks for this wondrous dairyland we live in than to enjoy a sundae on a hot summer afternoon? Here are five of Madison's greatest.
Lake Vista Cafe elevates informal dining at Monona Terrace
If you can't afford a lakefront condo even in this tanking housing market, worry not: The Lake Vista Cafe provides a meal's worth of spectacular views with no fear of foreclosure. From the cafe's home atop Monona Terrace, the panorama of Lake Monona is gorgeous even on a cloudy day. Tucked away six stories above John Nolen Drive, Lake Vista Cafe provides a cozy little aerie.
Daisy Cafe & Cupcakery is for grownups
Even by the standards of this restaurant-rich town, the near east side abounds with good places to eat, including popular breakfast spots Lazy Jane's and Monty's Blue Plate. To brave the crowds at either one on a weekend morning requires some grit and determination. Thankfully, Daisy Cafe and Cupcakery is here to accept some of the overflow and in short order has established itself as a destination in its own right.
Circolo Supper Club in Verona serves up theme dinners
When we Wisconsinites hear the words "supper club," a heap of golden-battered walleye and a Lazy Susan loaded with crudités probably spring to mind. But across the country, a different kind of supper club is making a comeback.
Paoli's Schoolhouse Cafe delivers a fresh, simple noon menu
Come April, most Madisonians are stir-crazy and fun-hungry and looking for novelty. Luckily, road trips are back on the menu. The car feels toasty, the sky out your window is a crisp, hopeful blue, and if you're headed in the direction of Paoli, a satisfying lunch awaits you at the Schoolhouse Cafe.
