Madison Freakfest 2009: Sights and sounds from the State Street Halloween bash
Photographer Christopher Guess strolled up and down State Street Saturday night to get a look at what is always an impressive parade of creative costumes. He took along a microphone in the hopes of getting some of the stories behind the costumes.
Among the ghouls: A photographic ride-along with a costumed Madison Critical Mass on Halloween Eve
Between 70 and 100 bikers in all manner of costumes descended on Madison’s downtown Friday night, shutting down parts of John Nolen Drive, East Washington Avenue and University Avenue and other streets for portions of the night.
Off limits
This photo essay is the result of a three-month attempt to gain access to areas of Dane County that most people have never seen. Most of these places receive public funding and yet restrict access to taxpayers. The people in charge were usually baffled about why we wanted to photograph their facilities. The answer: We hope to shine a light on places that are behind closed doors and electronic locks, but have a significant effect on local life.

The Halloween costumes were the most interesting sight found along the length of State Street on Friday night, just as it should be. There was a broad but fairly predictable array to be seen; Spartan warriors, a leprechaun, Jesus, "sexy fill-in-the-blank," Pamplona bull runners, gnomes, and a peanut butter sandwich.
