Instead of that year in college...
College basketball purists who detest what the NBA's age-limit policy has done to the sport have found an unlikely hero in Milwaukee Bucks rookie point guard Brandon Jennings.
The Midwest Beat and The Selfish Gene are your Band to Band Combat finalists
After four rounds of online balloting from over 1,400 voters, The Midwest Beat and The Selfish Gene have emerged as the 2009 Band to Band Combat finalists. That means they'll perform in front of a live audience at The Frequency on Thursday, November 19 for a bushel of prizes including studio time, gift certificates and CD dubbing services.
Madison's own soccer shocker
Video footage of University of New Mexico soccer player Elizabeth Lambert trying to turn an opposing player into a PEZ dispenser showed up online late last week. By Monday, the cable news networks were running the scene of Lambert violently pulling the other player to the ground by her ponytail again and again while expressing their dismay. Letterman also ran it repeatedly, and seemed to think it was funny.
Band to Band Combat field pared to eight, your questions answered!
One week ago, the Band to Band Combat ballot featured 38 songs from 38 bands. That's a lot of music and you're forgiven if you didn't listen to every song. But there's no doubt that eight songs are significantly easier to listen to than 38, especially if you're doing that listening at work. The expectation here is for some informed decision making, voters!
Tuning in, turning on baseball vs. football
Game Four of the World Series on Sunday drew an average TV audience of 22.8 million viewers. That was the highest among the first five games and the largest baseball audience since 2004, when an average of 25.4 million people watched the Red Sox sweep the Cardinals for Boston's first title since 1918.
Bret Bielema vs. the critics
In talking about last week's bye at his press conference on Monday, Badger football coach Bret Bielema mentioned that taking a break from critics could be just as therapeutic as a week off from bone-crushing hits.
Madison to host Ultimate college championships in spring 2010
The best college ultimate Frisbee players in the country will converge on Madison this spring for the 2010 Ultimate Players Association college championships. In a Monday release, the UPA announced that the tournament, which features 20 open and 20 women’s squads, will be held at the Redden Soccer Complex from Friday, May 28 through Sunday, May 30, with the finals in each division taking place at Breese Stevens Field on Monday, May 31.
Following the money
The New York Yankees have assembled the most expensive roster in Major League Baseball each year since 1998. The Yanks' $201 million payroll this season is 77% larger than that of the Los Angeles Angels, their rivals in the American League Championship Series, whose payroll ranks sixth.
The suite life at Camp Randall
The view from the Camp Randall luxury suite is spectacular, but removed from the much-trumpeted Badger game atmosphere. One of my fellow guests gazes out the window and says, "It's like watching a really sweet high-def TV."
Carrying a ball for Bret Bielema
Wisconsin football coach Bret Bielema is trying a high school motivational tool with tailback Zach Brown, who turned the ball over for the third time in three games at Minnesota last week.
Madison's Friday night lights
A Madison high school hasn't won a state title in football since West beat Stevens Point in 1977. City school rosters are often dwarfed by their suburban opponents, both in terms of numbers and physical size of the players.
Coach knows best
The fifth-grade football team I help coach is off to a 1-1 start, same as the Green Bay Packers. Our first game was a little sloppy, but the kids played well enough to win, just like the Packers. Our opponents took advantage of our problems with blocking and disrupted the offense enough to beat us in week two. Just like You Know Who.
Diving into Forward Music Fest 2009, Friday night
With a sketched-together plan to breeze through the Forward Music Fest's Friday night schedule, I help run my son's fifth-grade football practice thinking I might possibly be the only guy in the state to be yelling "Do you want to be the hammer or the nail?" who will be surrounded by hipster beards listening to a laptop band in two hours.
Jock ick
Athletes are often criticized for being too guarded. Agents and public-relations handlers shroud their personalities from the public. That's why we flock to their Twitter feeds and personal blogs, to try and catch a glimpse of who they are as actual people.
State Journal's loss of Packers reporter Jason Wilde is Good Karma's gain
The Wisconsin State Journal didn't exactly kick Green Bay Packers beat reporter Jason Wilde out the door, but longtime fans may be sore that it didn't do enough to keep him. After 13 years with the paper, 10 as full-time Packers beat reporter, Wilde accepted a voluntary buyout and this week went to work for Good Karma Broadcasting, which owns Madison ESPN affiliate 100.5 FM.
'Brent' Favre shirt hits the fans
On June 18, amid rumors of Brett Favre's talks with the Minnesota Vikings, the national sports blog Deadspin posted a link to a Madison website. It was for a green-and-yellow T-shirt with the image of Favre and the state of Wisconsin with the words, "We'll Never Forget You, Brent." But most of those who clicked the link to buy the shirt got an error message.
Did we see you at the King Street Block Party?
On a day that felt more like mid-October than late August, the King Street Block Party gave Madisonians one last opportunity to let it all hang out last Saturday before school started this week.
Three's a crowd for Badgers QB
For the past week and a half, Wisconsin football practices have been open to the media. In the digital age, that means fans are updated several times daily with detailed blog posts, tweets and even video reports from the sidelines at Camp Randall by reporters covering the team.
A lapsed Vikings fan's dilemma over Brett Favre
A couple years ago in this space, I wrote about how Brett Favre's steady, managed, almost methodical play in Green Bay had won me over, after a lifetime of being a Minnesota Vikings fan. I leaped aboard the Packers bandwagon and rode it all the way to the NFC championship game, when the Pack lost in overtime to New York. Now what the hell am I supposed to do?
2009 Madison's Favorites: Multimedia
Whether we're picking it up off our driveways or downloading it to our mobile devices, we not only love our media in Madison, we love to have strong opinions about it. And we definitely favor the fire-hose approach. Papers? Let's have several. Blogs? Haven't you started one yet? Podcasts? Update them more often!
Brewers' to-do list: Win
Remember May? The Brewers fans in your life probably do. It's the month they spent far more time pumping their fists than shaking their heads. The Crew won 18 games in May, decisively taking series against teams like Chicago (2-1), Florida (3-0) and St. Louis (4-2), all of which are above .500 and in contention for playoff spots. On June 1, Milwaukee was 30-21, first in the National League's Central Division, a game in front of St. Louis and four in front of Chicago.
Packers by the minute
For an indication of how the coverage of sports in general and pro football in particular has changed from the days of Grantland Rice, one need only glance at The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Packers blog. On Tuesday afternoon, writer Greg Bedard provided a play-by-play rundown of how each quarterback performed in two-minute drills.
Chad Lee files papers to run for Congress, website remains sparse
Mount Horeb's Chad Lee has taken his campaign for Congress beyond social networking websites, announcing Tuesday that he has filed forms with the Federal Election Commission to challenge incumbent U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin, a Democrat, for Wisconsin's 2nd Congressional District seat in 2010.
Madison Mustangs: Too good for their own good?
Beating your opponents by an average score of 50-10 should be good news to a football team. But for Bob Gingras, owner and head coach of the Madison Mustangs, it's reason to worry.
A new day for old guys
On Monday, everyone wanted to talk about Tom Watson. Some folks who don't know a birdie from a bunker watched more golf on Sunday than they had in years as Watson vied to become the oldest player ever to win a major championship at the British Open.
Brew ha ha
The Milwaukee Brewers generated some momentum for the second half of the season with a special promotion this week. For every ball that Prince Fielder took deep in the All-Star Home Run Derby Monday night, the club knocked a buck off the price of a Loge Outfield Box Seat for its mid-August series with the Padres.
Chad Lee is better looking than you and running for Congress
With a sudden outburst in social network activity and the establishment of a new website, Mount Horeb native and Better Butler co-founder Chad Lee has unofficially declared himself a candidate for Wisconsin's 2nd Congressional District.
Mallards go batty
Each spring, one of the biggest challenges facing Madison Mallards manager C.J. Thieleke is to take college players accustomed to using aluminum bats and get them comfortable hitting with wood.
FlipFlopFlyBall.com takes baseball whimsically
Baseball, perhaps more than any other sport, encourages fans to become obsessed with the game's lore, statistics, history and mythology. Craig Robinson, an English artist in Bellingham, Wash., has combined all those aspects in the wonderfully distracting FlipFlopFlyBall.com.
Home Talent League offers cheap thrills
Middleton's Home Talent League baseball team plays its home games at Sorenson/Bakken Field on Mendota Avenue, just north of University. If you get there early enough for a Sunday afternoon game, you can plop your lawn chair on the hill overlooking the third-base line, under a canopy of leafy trees.
