From hybrid cars to biodegradable plastic picnic utensils, products historically about as "green" as battery acid are changing their image, if not their chemical structure. Paint is no exception. For parents who want to decorate a newborn's room to construction professionals who have developed chemical sensitivities, a new innovation to an old environmental hazard is filling a much-needed niche in a decidedly chemical-heavy industry: low-VOC paint.

The forest and wildlife ecology scientist at UW-Madison says that it wasn't fear of paper birch blight in the Northwoods that had him scared; it was fear of meeting with a group of artists. George Zens is finally breaking even. It only took three years, but that's not too bad. The newspaper industry has seen massive consolidation on the national level in recent years. Regional news sources, those going "local, local, local," have actually been doing all right. Some, like the Sustainable Times, are even growing. This past October, George Zens' personal media creation generated enough ad revenue to put a little extra in the bank. It is finally sustainable.

FoRCE offers health insurance plan for Dane County artists
There's good news for uninsured artists in Dane County. The Foundation of Retaining Creative Energy, or FoRCE, in Madison has partnered with Fractured Atlas of New York City, to provide a limited-benefit medical plan. HealthAssist provides discounts for medical care and fixed-limit reimbursements for remaining expenses such as prescription medication.
Bike the barns of western Dane County on the Tour de CSA
Jonathan Hunter likes to bike. He likes to eat organic foods. Combining these two passions, he and friend Kevin Walsh hatched a plan one summer's day while touring the backroads west of Madison: organize a bike ride around a few local Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farms. It could be a fund-raiser, an awareness-raiser, a two-wheeled agricultural happening!

Sugar Maple Traditional Music Festival dances through the rain
Held at Lake Farm County Park, just south of Madison, this fourth edition of the annual late-summer music festival saw its largest Friday night crowd yet, topping 460 attendees. Over 600 music fans passed through the gate by 5 p.m. on Saturday, despite some steady precipitation. But no one complained about the rain. It has been so dry in fact that, despite an all day soaking; there was very little mud.
