A Thousand Words at the Overture Center Promenade Hall
The art world is ecstatic when a box of stunning black and white photos from the ’30s is discovered amongst some long-lost possessions of Ernest Hemingway. A curator from the Metropolitan Museum of Art immediately lays claim to them, but so does a woman who might be the granddaughter of the photographer, Walker Evans. As the stories unfold, both in the 1930s and the present day, one question remains: What’s a picture worth?

The cast will feature American Players Theater actress/Forward Theater advisory company member Sarah Day; UW Madison MFA alum Josh McCabe; and Milwaukee actors Molly Rhode, Stacy Hicks, Georgina McKee, and Libby Amato.

This exceptional theater experience will be held at the Overture Center Promenade Hall starting January 19th and running through February 5th.

Emancipator with special guest Little People at the Majestic Theatre
Come out to see Emancipator at the Majestic Theatre on February 16th!

To some, it must seem like this young electronic producer came out of nowhere this year, but those in the know have been following Emancipator since he self-released his first album, “Soon It Will Be Cold Enough,” at the age of 19 in 2006. His agile melodies layered over headnodic, immaculately-produced beats captivated fans across the internet and across the world. “Soon It Will Be Cold Enough” was picked up by Japanese super-producer Nujabes, pressed in Japan and sold 5,000 copies in the first six months. Emancipator landed a Puma sponsorship, gave an interview to Rolling Stone Japan, and even had his song “Maps” played at the Bejing Olympics.
His latest album “Safe In The Steep Cliffs” blends new instrumentation and organic samples with the signature Emancipator style of clean production, silky melodies and addictive drums. Dense layers of choirs, horns, American folk instruments such as the banjo and mandolin, violin and some distinct Asian influences make for a playful but refined album built out of intricate tracks listeners can enjoy on as many levels as they want. Dance to it, chill out to it, immerse your mind in it.

Andreas Kapsalis & Goran Ivanovic Guitar Duo at the High Noon Saloon
On February 20th, the High Noon Saloon will host the Andreas Kapsalis & Goran Ivanovic Guitar Duo performing their Live Soundtrack for the silent film "The Adventures of Prince Achmed".

Combining the sounds of steel- and nylon-string acoustic guitars in a stew seasoned with multifinger attacks, percussive beats, and heavy Serbian and Greek influences, Kapsalis and Ivanovic have created one tasty experimental dish… Kapsalis’s two-handed steel-string parts frequently create the illusion of three guitars instead of two… Ivanovic is no slouch on the nylon, either, wringing out lithe melodic lines throughout.

Todd Clouser's A Love Electric at the High Noon Saloon
On February 21st, the High Noon Saloon will host Todd Clouser's A Love Electric.

Baja, Mexico-based—by way of Minneapolis—guitarist Todd Clouser and his band, A Love Electric, make their Royal Potato Family recording debut with 20th Century Folk Selections. The album, which is part of a series of releases planned for 2012 by the much buzzed about young jazz artist, collects eight interpretations of songs he calls “folkloric in nature.” Ranging from his anthemic take on protest singer Malvina Reynolds “Little Boxes” to a psychedelicized, guitar freak out on the Beastie Boys iconic “Gratitude,” Clouser displays a muso’s appreciation of songs and styles through the lens of jazz-inspired improvisation. His reading of Neil Young’s “The Needle And The Damage Done” deconstructs its haunted melody to uncover even deeper sorrow in the storyteller’s tale, while a gorgeous straight-ahead take on Nirvana’s “All Apologies” replaces Kurt Cobain’s classic lyric with the dark moan of a trumpet. Special guests joining A Love Electric on 20th Century Folk Selections include trumpeter Steven Bernstein and percussionist Cyro Baptista.

Todd Clouser—a revered jazz name south of the border in his adopted home of Mexico—spent the majority of 2011 on the road touring the U.S. In doing so, he worked his band into a razor sharp unit capable of telepathically melding jazz finesse spiked with rock energy into its own instantly identifiable sound. As the results captured on 20th Century Folk Selections prove, a major new voice in the idiom is on the rise.

Daniel and the Lion / Miles Nielsen & the Rusted Hearts at The High Noon Saloon
Daniel and the Lion/Miles Nielsen & the Rusted Hearts will be performing at the High Noon Saloon on Thursday March 1, at 8:00PM!

This event is 18+ to enter.

Consider them a musical mystery which still manages to sound both fresh and familiar. Whatever you choose to think going in, Daniel and the Lion will control the space between your ears for as long as you listen before managing to force yourself to pull away. This is music for anyone who loves bands from Stephen Kellogg’s Sixers to Ryan Adams, competently recorded by a band which knows how to craft a pop-laden hook without selling out to lowest common denominator bullshit.

et it snap, let it roll, hand claps, drums crash,, tele-tones and solos. Somewhere between a bar and the recording studio, Miles Nielsen's stirs up his own pop rock brand of Beatles-eque Cosmic Americana. Pop rock arrangements and sunny melodies tucked between a long lost country folk steel guitar floating through speakers around crashing drums, bouncing bass lines and smooth as butter keys. Born in Rockford, IL, home of Cheap Trick and 'Symbol', power pop DNA runs through the veins of his songs and performances.
