Legendary 1930s bank robber John Dillinger (Johnny Depp) and his moll (Marion Cotillard) try to escape the clutches of FBI agent Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale). Depp is a satisfyingly quirky presence, and the robbery scenes are sensational, but Michael Mann's film ultimately is plodding and overburdened with subplots. Still, those Wisconsin locations are handsome. (K.B.)
