Seven light sex farces. The thread connecting all of them is Shirley MacLaine - for whom my heart has always beat double-time - and the script and direction are by the makers of The Bicycle Thief, Shoeshine and Umberto D. (M.W.)

One of Peter Bogdanovich's guilty secrets: handed a Russian sf movie by Roger Corman, he was asked to cut in footage of bikini-clad space women and somehow contrive a plot. By necessity, his earthlings and aliens never communicate onscreen. Experiences like this are what drive filmmakers to drink.

Four Iranian women, humiliated by men in various distressing ways, make their way to a luminous orchard that seems to have a will of its own. Co-director Shirin Neshat, better known as a video artist, finds beauty and ambiguity in this film set amid Iran's 1953 coup. (K.B.)

A working-class single mom (Maggie Gyllenhaal) and a once-idealistic teacher (Viola Davis) join forces against entrenched bureaucrats to improve a failing Pittsburgh school. The lead actors carry the tale a long way, but the movie feels like it’s running for political office. (S.R.)

Homosexuality from the inside...A San Francisco based documentary team interview dozens of homosexuals from all sections of the country and every conceivable background. The film, surprisingly, emphasizes diversity; there is no way to pigeonhole, or dismiss, any of these people - and the points are made quietly, with, for the most part, no overt editorializing. Fascinating and humane; and certainly one of the best documentaries made on an often over-sensationalized subject. (M.W.)
Word Of Honor

Keeping mum on your journalistic sources. The director - Mel Danski, is married to ex-UW antiwar activist, Eleanor Pullen, whom you may remember from The War At Home. (M.W.)

Words and Music

Bio of the great, mismatched song writing duo, Richard Rogers and Lorenz Hart. Notable only for the music done to a fine turn by MGM's regulars.

In this impressive docudrama, Oliver Stone zeroes in on two men (Nicolas Cage and Michael Pena) trapped in the 9/11 rubble and tells their story with remarkable economy. With them, we are forced to find shards of hope within the hopelessness. (M.B.)

World War Z
Released: 2013
Rated: PG-13

A former U.N. investigator (Brad Pitt) searches for the source of a virus that’s turning humans into zombies. Though this movie is based on Max Brooks’ excellent apocalyptic novel, it doesn't work as a horror story, a medical thriller or a sci-fi action flick because you're unlikely to care about the characters. (M.J.)
World War Z 3D
Released: 2013
Rated: PG-13

When former U.N. investigator Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt) and his family get stuck in urban gridlock, he senses that it's no ordinary traffic jam. His suspicions are confirmed when, suddenly, the city erupts into chaos. A lethal virus, spread through a single bite, is turning healthy people into something vicious, unthinking and feral. As the pandemic threatens to consume humanity, Gerry leads a worldwide search to find the source of the infection and, with luck, a way to halt its spread. (TMS)

Another Jacques-Yves Cousteau's brilliant underwater-voyage documentaries: and Oscar-winner which provided the impetus for much of his later career.

In this sequel to Clash of the Titans, Perseus (Sam Worthington) and Zeus (Liam Neeson) must save the world from oblivion. The film is loud and uninspired, taking itself way too seriously. (M.S.)
