The Muppets reunite for a benefit show to save their old theater. Thanks to star and co-writer Jason Segel's abiding affection for these characters, nearly every last bit of this endlessly entertaining musical works. (S.R.)
The Murders in the Rue Morgue
Released: 1932

A very chi-chi adaptation of the Poe Thriller, complete with mad scientists, murderous apes and echoes of the 1920s Parisian avant-garde. It has some odd period charm. (M.W.)

The long-lost son (Lou Taylor Pucci) of a middle-aged couple (J.K. Simmons, Cara Seymour) turns up mentally impaired, and a therapist (Julia Ormond) discovers that the 1960s music of his youth snaps him into lucidity. The Naked and the Dead
Released: 1958
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Norman Mailer's existential war novel done in Raoul Walsh's muscle-flexing Objective Burma style. Needless to say, a mismatch which pleased neither writer nor director. "When Warner Brothers and the censors got through with this, Walsh moaned, "they took out all the Naked and just left the Dead!"
The Naked City
Released: 1948
Rated:
Now Playing? No
A model police-procedural thriller using a citywide manhunt for a B-girl's killer as the framework for a neo-realists study of '40s Manhattan flavored with little discreet Marzism. (Or perhaps not so discreet: both director Jules Dassin and writer Albert Maltz were on the blacklist within two years.) Terse, evocative; the location cinematography by William Daniels (an MGM wheelhorse, and Garbo's most frequent cameraman) is noteworthy.
The Naked Kiss
Released: 1964
Rated:
Now Playing? No
First scene: An angry hooker is being double-dealt by her pimp. She beats the hell out of him, and as she does, her wig falls off. She's bald. Shocked yet? Next scene: The hooker settles down in a small town, tries to reform. She becomes a nurse. The town's richest, handsomest catch decides to marry her. Mr. Right kisses his new bride and she can feel instantly that it's a "naked kiss," the kiss of a pervert. Still not shocked? She walks in on the guy, and he's molesting a ten-year-old girl...Shocked now? Well if you aren't you're probably shock proof - because this great low-budget Sam Fuller thriller has more kicks to the head than anything he's ever done. As Michel Mourlet said, in his review of "The Naked Kiss": "Let he who is not a ghost, dare to say he has felt nothing..."

This multi-generational saga traces a family's migration from India to a suburb in New York, and director Mira Nair handles it all like a master. Kal Penn plays a second-generation Bengali who only gradually comes to realize that his parents have much to teach him about where he came from. (K.W.)
The Nanny
Released: 1965
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Grand Guignol in Bette's post-Baby Jane vein, with two children menaced by their frosty governess.
The Nanny Diaries
Released: 2007
Rated: PG-13
Now Playing? No
A college student (Scarlett Johansson) works as a nanny for a socialite (Laura Linney) and her dysfunctional New York family. Johansson and Linney are excellent, but the film is flat-footed and tiresome. (M.B.)
The Narrow Margin
Released: 1952
Rated:
Now Playing? No
A hard-boiled cop, a gangster's moll about to spill the beans, and a salvo of hit men aboard a train hurrying through the night. This is one of the great '50s B movies: a tight, taut thriller without an ounce of flab.
The Nativity Story
Released: 2006
Rated: PG
Now Playing? No
This rather straightforward account of the events surrounding Jesusâ?? birth fails to wrestle with the miracles it beholds, just conducts a solemn procession through a story weâ??ve all heard countless times. Director Catherine Hardwicke opts for a stripped-down, hold-the-CGI approach, and sheâ??s unable to achieve transcendence with such limited means. (K.W.)
