A family of impoverished 19th century Swedish farmers forsakes their old land for the new: the shores of America and its Midwestern heartland. The trek is long, the promise limitless, the rewards ambiguous and sometimes tragic. Based on Wilhelm Moburg's epic novel (often compared to Knut Hamsun's contemporary Norwegian saga Growth of the Soil), this is one of the only great recent Swedish films not by Ingmar Bergman (albeit with some of his stock company). The film is both vast and intimate, brutal and lyrical; its poetic visuals are honed with a documentary edge. Much of the location photography for the American scenes was done in and near Wisconsin, including one scene at North Freedom and others near Baraboo.

Duel to the death between the A-Number-One Hobo and his nemesis, a homicidal train-detective named Shack. Another Aldrich slambanger, with an unfortunately portentous script. Keith Carradine's "apprentice hobo" is excruciating.

The Empire Strikes Back

The Force is still with them - or most of it, anyway. More spectacular than the first Star Wars, though perhaps it doesn't have as much naive drive and power. This, incidentally, was the last screenplay of the late s.f. novelist Leigh Brackett; she also wrote the scripts of The Big Sleep, Rio Bravo and El Dorado for Howard Hawks.
The Enchanted Cottage
Released: 1945
Rated:

An "ugly" young couple live together in an isolated cottage, where magically, their plainness blossoms into beauty. A sensitive, unsyrupy adaptation of the Arthur Wing Pinero fantasy. (M.W.)

Those who go to The End of the Affair expecting to see another English Patient will be sorely disappointed.

The Enforcer

One of the last of the "realistic" Warners gangster movies. Although he isn't credited, Raoul Walsh directed more than half of this.

The Europeans
Released: 1981

Henry James' ironic novel - on European experience vs. American innocence, as usual - faithfully adapted by the Ivory Merchant Jhabvala team.
The Ex
Released: 2007
Rated: PG-13

A slacker (Zach Braff) is forced to work for his father-in-law when his wife (Amanda Peet) gets pregnant. There’s not much verve here, though The Ex is still more appealing than most movies that pass as comedies these days. (S.D.)

Max Ophüls' account of King Charles II's exile in Holland.

Action stars of ‘80s and ‘90s unite in a story of aging mercenaries (Sylvester Stallone, Jet Li, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke) fighting an ex-CIA baddie (Eric Roberts). Stallone’s script seems thrown together, but the high-octane action scenes offer the requisite dumb fun. (M.S.)
The Expendables 2
Released: 2012
Rated: R
Now Playing? No
A quest for vengeance erupts when Mr. Church (Bruce Willis) reunites mercenary leader Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone), Lee Christmas (Jason Statham) and the rest of the Expendables gang. It's everything you think it is -- and less. (M.S.)
The Express

Syracuse University is the coming-out ground of Ernie Davis (Rob Brown), the first African-American Heisman Trophy winner, whose rumpled, distempered coach (Dennis Quaid) is a stubborn soul in a fedora and NASA-issued horn-rimmed glasses. The film is a doozy, full of stadium heroics and quiet acts of dignity, mixed with heartbreaking racism. (J.R.)
