Fascinating historical melodrama about one of the Vichy regime's lowest ebbs - the "trial" and execution of six French hostages, in retaliation for the murder of a Nazi officer. A painstaking recreation, charged with moral outrage - and reminiscent , in its subject and inexorable tension, of "Paths of Glory".

A live-action/animation version of the cartoon about a teenage race-car driver. The races are a feast of eye candy, the story as thin and weightless as an animation cel. (K.W.)

This live-action/animation version of the Japanese-import cartoon about a teenage race-car driver wants to go so fast it appears to be standing still; alas, it succeeds. The races are a veritable feast of eye candy, the story as thin and weightless as an animation cel. (K.W.)

Lloyd's last silent...it revolves around his efforts to save New York City's last horse-powered streetcar from extinction. Fast, buoyant, full of that special, pre-Crash, sunny optimism.

Spencer's Mountain

Often flabbergasting mixture of Walt Disney-John Ford-style Americana and sniggering prurience, occasionally in the same scene. When Henry Fonda discovered his agent had sent him into this movie - instead of the stage version of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?; for which Edward Albee had wanted him - he almost collapsed in frustration.
Spetters
Released: 1981
Rated:

Three young Dutch motorcyclists and their sexy siren race toward doom. A fast, punchy, vulgar movie which has a tendency, like its heroes, to rip itself up with its own speed. (M.W.)

Spider-Man 3
Released: 2007

Spider-Man (Tobey Maguire) fights the Sandman and the New Goblin in a film with way too many storylines. The gravity-defying action is thrilling, but the movie turns stiff whenever it's on the ground. (M.B.)

After taking a wrong turn down a wooded path, Chihiro and her parents discover an amusement park with a stall containing an assortment of food. Spirits of the Dead
Released: 1968
Rated:
Now Playing? No
A trilogy of Edgar Allen Poe adaptations - "Mertzengerstein, " "William Wilson" and "Never Bet Your Head with the Devil." These are serious adaptations; they attempt to evoke the special quality and mood of Poe, a bit more than the more celebrated Roger Corman movies. The first two, by Roger Vadim and Louis Malle, are well done, atmospheric, entirely satisfactory. Vadim even adds a few kinky undercurrents by casting Jane and Peter Fonda as unrequited lovers in "Metzengerstein." But the high rating is for the third episode: Federico Fellini's astonishing "Toby Dammit," which retranscribes Poe to the via Veneto, and the night flight of a decadent, sybartic movie star. This little known film is one of the best things Fellini has ever done: a little visual poem of mesmerizing energy and surreal beauty.
Spitfire
Released: 1934

Early Hepburn; she is cast, wildly off-type, as a lovelorn hillbilly. (M.W.)
Splash
Released: 1984
Rated:

Nudity, premarital sex and spicy language come to the Walt Disney Studios, engendering their biggest live-action hit in years. The ingredients may seem gamy, but the results are reassuringly naive, innocent and good hearted (which proves, once again, that context is everything). It's a charming fable-comedy about an idealistic young Jimmy Stewartish schmuck who's pursued by a determined mermaid. Nothing about the film is tacky, and a more convincing mermaid than Daryl Hannah has yet to be seen.
Splendor In The Grass
Released: 1961
Rated:

William Inge's special view of pre-depression Kansas - twangy automal shivering with sexual repression - has never been brought to the screen more poignantly than in this film original, the doomed love story of a small town Adonis and his passionate, broken girlfriend. Inge himself has a bit as an unsympathetic minister, the incandescent director is Elia Kazan at his Actors' Studio best. Turbulent and feverishly intense - with an annihilating last scene.
Splice
Released: 2010
Rated: R
Now Playing? No
Things go awry when married geneticist geniuses (Adrien Brody, Sarah Polley) attempt to create new life forms for a chilly biotech firm. This classic cautionary tale works simultaneously as a thriller, love story and meditation on what it means to be a scientist in a time in which everything is suddenly possible. (M.S.)
