MovieDescription
Righteous Kill
Released: 2008
Rated: R
Now Playing? No
It could have been a dream match-up -- Robert De Niro and Al Pacino strapping on the gloves and going 15 rounds -- but neither of them flexes any new muscles in Jon Avnet's thriller about a pair of New York City detectives who are willing to bend a few rules in order to see justice served. The movie never decides whether it wants to be gritty or stylized, but the sense of rhythm the two Oscar winners bring to even the most banal line has a certain fascination. (K.W.)

Rio
Released: 2011
Rated: G
Now Playing? No
A retro-feeling animated feature about a rare bird (voiced by Jesse Eisenberg) who goes to Rio to meet the last remaining female of his species (Anne Hathaway). The film isn’t emotionally rich, but it is fun, with tremendous color and energy. (S.R.)
Rio 2
Released: 2014
Rated: G

A nerdy macaw (voiced by Jesse Eisenberg) and his wife (voiced by Anne Hathaway) develop marital problems when they take a vacation in the Amazon with their three chicks. There's a subplot about rainforest destruction that might get kids interested in ecology, but the main story feels like a rejected episode of The King of Queens. (M.J.)

When a shipment of repeating rifles is stolen from the U.S. Cavalry, Capt. Haven (Stuart Whitman) and Sgt. Franklyn are sent to recover them and enlist the aid of an alcoholic former confederate and Indian hater, James Lassiter (Richard Boone) and a Mexican murderer, Rodriguez (Tony Franciosa). Lassiter, who owns one of the rifles, says it came from his embittered former commander Col. Pardee, while an Apache woman informant reveals that Pardee intends to sell the stolen arms to her people. Rio Grande
Released: 1950

The climax of John Ford's unofficial "Cavalry Trilogy," with some love-hate fireworks between Wayne and O'Hara that prefigure The Quiet Man. This is the weakest and most conventional of the three - and I could really do without the Sons of the Pioneers, who keep wandering around as an improbable group of "Regimental Singers" warbling Stan Jones and Dale Evans ballads. But this is a John Ford Western from his great years, and that means it has poetic landscapes, stirring sentiment and lusty action.
Ripple Effect
Released: 2007
Rated: R

Philippe Caland's karma-driven account of an L.A.-based fashion designer (Caland) who can't hit the big-time until he's cleared the accounts on a hit-and-run accident he was involved in 15 years ago has a very money-driven sense of the interconnectedness of things. Somehow, Caland got Forest Whitaker and Virginia Madsen to join him in this ill-fated venture. (K.W.)

Rise of the Planet of the Apes

In this funny, tense and fascinating film, a researcher (James Franco) raises a young chimpanzee uniquely affected by his experimental brain-repairing drug. Here's a movie where you can almost forget you're watching special effects, and simply fall into watching a great story. (S.R.)
Risky Business
Released: 1983
Rated: R

Flashily executed, often clever teenage sex comedy about the perils a suburbanite high-schooler can fall into in his parents' absence. One of the best of this dubious genre.
River of No Return
Released: 1954
Rated: NR

Shooting the rapids and roughing it: a volatile triangle, in the Canadian Rockies, featuring a sexy dance hall girl, a rugged backwoodsman, and a dashing gambler. An odd but very effective excursion out West by the normally urban and contemporary Otto Preminger. (M.W.)

Robin and the Seven Hoods

Frankie and the Clan (in their only real musical) play at being gangsters, a joke that doesn't seem so funny in retrospect.
Robin Hood
Released: 2010
Rated: PG-13
Now Playing? No
In Ridley Scott's film, Robin Hood (Russell Crowe) goes from loyal warrior to alienated, virtuous outlaw, Marion (Cate Blanchett) by his side. Too many extraneous characters make it muddled, and not enough action makes it dull. (K.B.)
