MovieDescription
Religulous
Released: 2008
Rated: R
Now Playing? No
Bill Maher hosts a whirlwind of interviews with representatives of Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and Mormonism (Eastern and African religions are paid no mind here, which is one of the film's stumbling points). Though fashioned as popular entertainment with laughs and light moments, the film is serious about its mission to upend our rote allegiance to blind faith. (M.B.)

Rembrandt
Released: 1936
Rated:

A very bittersweet film biography of the masterly Dutch painter, focusing on his long slide to poverty, disgrace and ruin. Laughton starts the character bit magisterially, as if he and Korda were still doing Henry VIII; then he suddenly imbues Rembrandt with a withering humility and sadness. The lighting, likewise, attempts to duplicate the chiaroscuro effects of Rembrandt's paintings - sometimes broadly, sometimes subtly. A unusual film, likable, very "arty;" it financial failure may have dogged Laughton and Korda in their even more colossal failure of the next year, I, Claudius.

Comedy Centralâ??s police satire comes to the big screen with a story of hapless Reno cops investigating a terrorist attack. There are some funny bits, but the lack of a story arc makes it seem like an overlong television episode. (M.I.)

The great painter (Michel Bouquet) is old, sick and grief-stricken when his son (Vincent Rottiers) arrives for a visit. The film works best as a small-scale domestic drama, not a story about great art, but Christa Theré is a vision as the elder Renoir’s muse. (K.B.)

In this stylish, often-frenetic first feature from Norwegian filmmaker Joachim Trier, reality deals blows to two young men who are best friends and struggling writers.
