Infidelity at Rome's huge "stazione Termie," De Sica and Zavattini had originally surrounded the central love story, interesting in itself, with scores of fascinating little vignettes. David Selznick, in a burst of over-protectiveness toward wife Jennifer Jones, eliminated them all, winding up with an hour-long film. "Ridiculous" was De Sica's only comment, but the movie still has a lot of raw feeling and compassion.
