An eccentric millionaire in the '20s tracks down the family of his lost love, boards with them (disguised as an artist) and surreptitiously plots ways to leave them his fortune. One of a little early '50s trilogy of period musicals directed by Sirk; upbeat and pleasant - with a notable bit by 19-year old James Dean as the Malt Shop "gourmet."

An other Hawksian community - this time, wild animal trappers in Kenya. (They don't kill their prey, since they work on consignment for zoos.) The hunting footage (none of which is fake) is remarkable, the story typically leisurely and beguiling. Despite its air of lightness and casualness, this is a great late work by one of the American cinema's true masters.

An early version of one of Dorothy Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsey mysteries, with Robert Montgomery a little far afield as the flippant aristocrat-sleuth.

Adapted from the bestseller, the film charts a loose constellation of Baltimore residents (Jennifer Aniston, Drew Barrymore, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Connelly, Scarlett Johansson) as they date, marry, break up, and make up. For every genuine moment of relationship insight there are another five wincing examples of female delusion and hysteria. (K.J.)
