G.I. Blues

The movie that celebrated Elvis's exit from the Army. He eases into the persona Colonel Tom Parker wanted for him - a crewcut all-American boy - and what happened afterwards was mostly slow death.

Rated: PG
Now Playing? No
A team of fighters from the U.S. armed forces (Channing Tatum, Dwayne Johnson, D.J. Cotrona, Byung-hun Lee) must battle their mortal enemy and a new threat from inside the government. It seems as if no one -- cast and writers included -- read the script before the camera started rolling. (M.J.)

Released: 2009
Rated: PG-13

In a live-action take on the Hasbro toy, an elite multinational squad of G.I. Joes (commanded by Dennis Quaid) battles an evil scientist. With its mindless action and nonsensical plot, it’s the kind of movie that bludgeons the viewer into submission. (M.B.)

Gabriel Over The White House

A conscienceless crook is elected President, then experiences a mystical transformation. One of the most bizarre American political fantasy-parables ever, by the director of Stage Door and My Man Godfrey. It has to be seen to be believed. (M.W.)

The stars of a 1970s sci-fi show - now scraping a living through re-runs and sci-fi conventions - are beamed aboard an alien spacecraft. Believing the cast's heroic on-screen dramas are historical documents of real-life adventures, the band of aliens turn to the ailing celebrities for help in their quest to overcome the oppressive regime in their solar system. (TMS)
Galileo
Released: 1973
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Bertolt Brecht's great drama of the scientist against they system: Galileo Galilei, whose doomed lifelong battles with the church were spurred by the Pope's demand that he recant his "heresies" - the "atheistic" assumption that the earth revolved around the sun. Brecht wrote the play only months before fleeing a modern-day inquisition - the HUAC - and it was originally staged (with Charles Laughton in the title role) in Los Angeles by director Joseph Losey - who gives it, here, 26 years later,a smart and stinging revival. One of the best of the American Film Theater plays.
Gallipoli
Released: 1981
Rated:
Now Playing? No
The story of a famous military debacle; the British Imperial Army's futile expedition against Turkish emplacements in the Dardanelles in 1915 -- in which a chauvinistic Australian contingent is shunted into a bloody cul-de-sac,an imbecilically botched battle where they will charge to certain death unless a desperate courier can get the orders reversed. The focus is on a prototypical "male bonding" love story between two young Aussies; Weir charges his images with tension and a physical beauty that keeps veering toward paranoia. The antiwar statement - the carnage at Gallipoli, the carnage of all wars -- shakes you, but not quite as much as the deeper mystery behind it: the sadistic massacre of the young and brave, the death of love.
Gambit

Topkapi rip-off; another exotic heist, with the luscious Shirley in another of her oddball Eurasian roles. (M.W.)
Gamer
Released: 2009

Gamers in an online role-playing game use virtual-reality techniques to control real human beings as they wage vicious battle against one another. The movie fails at combining smart-ass social critique and body-count ultraviolence. (M.S.)
Games
Released: 1967
Rated:

The pranks of death: masks, lies and deadly games. An obvious variation on Clouzot's classic Chinese box thriller Les Diaboliques, with Signoret almost repeating her earlier role.
Gammera the Invincible

Gandhi
Released: 1982
Rated:

Richard Attenborough's broadly scoped, lovingly detailed bio of India's great pacifist leader -- the father of nonviolent resistance -- from his first youthful stirrings as a lawyer in South Africa to those tragic final days, when his country, independent at last, began to tear itself apart. Sincere, honest, extremely well acted -- a majestic tribute (in the David Lean manner) from the British Empire to its quiet conqueror.

In 1950s L.A., a police chief (Josh Brolin) assembles a team of uncorrupted cops (Ryan Gosling, Robert Patrick, Michael Peña, Anthony Mackie, Giovanni Ribisi) to oust a mob kingpin (Sean Penn). Filled with stylized gunplay and over-the-top violence, this movie seems like a derivative riff on Brian DePalma's 1987 classic The Untouchables. (S.R.)
