MovieDescription
Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer
Released: 2007
Rated: PG
Now Playing? No
The superhero series continues its once-over-lightly, tongue-slightly-in-cheek approach. If it’s not quite as fun as the first time, at least it’s not wallowing in doom and gloom like Batman and Spider-Man. (K.W.)
Fantastic Mr. Fox
Released: 2009
Rated: PG
Now Playing? No
Using stop-motion animation, Wes Anderson adapts a lesser-known Roald Dahl story about a fox (George Clooney) who finds himself the target of the three farmers from whom he steals his meals. With wonderful playfulness, Anderson gives a completely manufactured world both heart and genuine humanity. (S.R.)
Fantastic Voyage
Released: 1966
Rated: PG
Now Playing? No
Minor special-effects classic about a team of surgeons shrunk to microbe size and then sent to perform brain surgery from the inside. Fun, if a little straight-faced. (M.W.)

In this true story, a KGB agent (Emir Kusturica) leaks earthshaking documents to a nervous French engineer (Guillaume Canet). Kusturica and Canet's scenes together are wonderful in this fascinating look at Soviet life in the late Brezhnev era. (K.B.)
Farewell, My Lovely
Released: 1975
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Phillip Marlowe, knight errant of L.A.'s mean streets, tracks the elusive ex-chippie Velma from sleazy alleys to perfumed mansions, uncovering dark plots, murder and treachery along the way. The best of several movie versions of Raymond Chandler's first novel; Mitchum is a great Marlowe.
Farewell, My Queen

Rated: R
Now Playing? No
Marie Antoinette bonds with a servant as the French Revolution comes to a close.
Fargo
Released: 1996
Rated: R

The Coen brothers' 1996 thriller about a troubled car salesman (William H. Macy), a bungled crime and a very pregnant sheriff (Frances McDormand), topped off with over-the-top Midwestern accents.
Faro, Goddess of Water

Now Playing? No
A Malian outcast returns to his village.
Fast & Furious
Released: 2009
Rated: PG-13

Vin Diesel and the rest of the gang from the first installment are back for the third sequel. Diesel pursues a vendetta amid fast cars and sleazy criminals in this dumb but fun action film. (K.B.)

Released: 2013
Rated: PG-13
Now Playing? No
A special agent (Dwayne Johnson) asks a fugitive (Vin Diesel) to help him take down the leader of a vehicular-warfare gang in exchange for a full pardon. Director Justin Lin understands the types of crazy stunts the audience wants to see, but he fails to assemble the action sequences in a way that makes sense. (S.R.)

A patriarch (Frank Morgan) meddles in his children’s love affairs in this early screwball comedy penned by Preston Sturges.

Released: 2011
Rated: PG-13
Now Playing? No
Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his former FBI/now car-thief pal Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker) return for the fifth entry in the Fast and the Furious franchise. This kickass demolition derby is pure dumb summer fun. (M.S.)
Fast Five: The IMAX Experience
Released: 2011
Rated: PG-13
Now Playing? No
Fast Food Nation
Released: 2006
Rated: R
Now Playing? No
Richard Linklater uses multiple storylines to show the seamy underbelly of the fast-food industry. Itâ??s a worthy film that succeeds in its critique of misbehaving corporations but fails as a character-driven narrative. (M.S.)
Fast Times At Ridgemont High

The rituals of Southern California adolescence, based on the reportage of Rolling Stone's Cameron Crowe.

Faster
Released: 2010
Rated: R
Now Playing? No
A better-than-average vendetta film about an ex-con (Dwayne Johnson) who means to kill each of the snitches who made off with the spoils of a past robbery. Johnson shines, as does Billy Bob Thornton as a junkie cop on his tail. (M.S.)
Fat Albert

Fat City
Released: 1972
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Two tank-town boxers on the fringe - one on the way up, one indisputably down - share a few cups of misery in the city of the night, and wake up to a day that scalds your eyes. Based on Leonard Gardner's novel: a lean, poignant film which earned John Huston his best critical notices in decades. (Marlon Brando had been slated for the Stacy Keach role and lost it in a misunderstanding; otherwise, the notices and the grosses might have been even higher.) It's an excellent film, with a lot of the tinny, lowlife despair that flirts around the edges of The Asphalt Jungle and The Misfits; here the minor characters have seized center stage.
Fat Girl
Released: 2001
Rated: NR
Now Playing? No
Fate Is The Hunter

Happy go lucky pilot is involved in fatal airline crash; troubled buddy seeks to exonerate him. Based on an Ernest K. Gann novel - and for some crazy reason, I've always liked it.

A story about a father-son relationship befuddles our critic

Amiable World War II era romantic comedy froth, with Grant pulling a Charles Laughton as a sort of comic, rumpled beachcomber confronted with a ravishing Frenchwoman and an island full of orphans. When screenwriter Peter Stone accepted his Oscar for this film, he remarked, "My thanks to Cary Grant, who keeps winning these things for other people. (M.W.)
