Two American CIA guys (John Travolta, Jonathan Rhys Meyers) are on a bloody rampage in an ultraviolent Paris. Travolta is compelling and amusingly loony, but don't mull over the plot. (M.W.)

Like The Naked Night, Hour Of The Wolf, and Serpent's Egg, this is one of the nightmare Bergmans: a claustrophobic portrayal of mental and moral disintegration, told in fragments, with the climax--a vicious sex murder - shown at the beginning. Shot in monochrome, Germanic in both language and artistic influence, the film shows a clenched, bitter, joyless world--a killing world from which there is no escape but murder or suicide.

Frost/Nixon

Behind-the-scenes account of the momentous interviews with Richard Nixon (Frank Langella) conducted by British TV personality David Frost (Michael Sheen) in 1977, three years after the former president had resigned from office in disgrace. The movie is at its best when it is examining the fragile intersection of media and politics, but I’m not sure that this story of Frost’s chutzpah and Nixon’s intractability is inherently that gripping. (M.B.)

When a princess who's been locked away for years (voiced by Idina Menzel) emerges to take over the throne, she must make amends with the sister (voiced by Kristen Bell) she almost killed in an accident years earlier. With soaring songs, gorgeous animation and a story with feminist undertones, this is Disney magic in 21st-century form. (M.J.)

Frozen River

In Courtney Hunt's close-to-the-bone look at a woman who smuggles illegal aliens across the Canadian-U.S. border in order to put food on her table, Melissa Leo gives an utterly vanity-free performance that invites all sorts of responses. The movie works as a piece of Kmart realism, but it's also a thriller, which Hunt handles with the same low-key finesse. (K.W.)

The audience is encouraged to belt out tunes with sister princesses (voiced by Idina Menzel and Kristen Bell) in this Disney tale about fear, power and forgiveness.

Flashbacks reveal the last day in the life of Oscar Grant (Michael B. Jordan), a young man shot during an altercation with California police. A heavy-handed script undermines Jordan's excellent depiction of a decent guy with a bit of an edge. (S.R.)

A bereaved teen (Victoria Justice) seeking a night of Halloween frivolity gets stuck babysitting her troublesome 8-year-old brother (Jackson Nicoll), and calamity ensues. Though director Josh Schwartz has some decent credentials (Gossip Girl, Chuck), this movie lacks both humor and heart. (S.R.)

A couple (Naomi Watts and Tim Roth) and their young son are terrorized by intruders (Michael Pitt and Brady Corbet). Director Michael Haneke is trying to get us to choke on our lust for cinematic violence, and he largely succeeds while disturbing the hell out of us. (K.W.)
