In this multilayered comedy, a dog goes missing, and its owner (Diane Keaton), her physician husband (Kevin Kline) and various family members search for it. Writer/director/baby boomer Lawrence Kasdan has made another generational statement, but it's a modest one compared to The Big Chill. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing. (K.B.)

Steve Carell and Tina Fey create a totally believable portrait of an overburdened New Jersey husband and wife who have little time alone as a couple. Still, the film is only mildly amusing and never breaks out of its dullsville rut. (M.B.)

Dicken's semi autobiographical classic of youth, education, love, disillusionment and the tragedies of maturity - with its blazingly colorful gallery of characters - in a superb adaptation, probably the best of the many films taken from his novels. The look of the movie (closely based on Phiz' original illustrations) is marvelous, and almost every role is perfectly - cast - especially W.C. Fields, a revelation as Micawber.

This feels like a cookie-cutter World War II movie, except that its fighting men are North African Arabs and Berbers, whose contribution to the French war effort has been overlooked for the last half-century. The well-made story is infused with a sense of nobility and heroism. (S.A.)

Terence Malick's hauntingly complex ballad of early American love-on-the-run, shot by Nestor Almendos in a Wyeth-like farmland of endlessly waving wheat, with burnished, golden light that floods the land with amber tones. The movie is both rhapsodically poetic and socially trenchant; the theme is the schism between classes, the primacy of natural instincts, the tragedy of social divisions. A masterpiece.
