Two American backpackers from NYU run afoul of a lycanthropic curse on the British moors. One dies (though he has a distressing habit of returning at odd moments); the other carries the plague to London, where he notices strange eruptions in his skin come the full moon...The special effects (by the ingenious Rick Baker), are gruesome, but the story and characters are winningly contemporary and lighthearted. This may be the most (intentionally) funny movie of the whole werewolf cycle.(M.W.)

Your staple inspirational pro-war film - the "bad kid" who finds himself in the Navy (or Army or Marines) and is made a man by the combined efforts of a good woman and a growly; heart-of-gold D.I. - slicked up and contemporized with nudity, sex , a choppy-socky and rock 'n' roll. Taylor Hackford makes the film look appropriately flat and empty, the actors are good - but beyond Joe Cocker's spine-tingling credits song, I've never understood what the shouting was about.

Joseph Conrad again, this time in a rarely-seen film which many critics regard as the finest adaptation of his work ever put on the screen. The story: moral disintegration in the darker reaches of Malaya. (M.W.)
