In Ridley Scott’s would-be crime epic, Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe star as the real-life Harlem drug lord Frank Lucas and the cop who brought him down in the early-‘70s. We don’t know much more about these two at the end than we did at the beginning. (K.W.)
American Gigolo
Released: 0000
Rated:
Now Playing? No
Paul Schrader borrows the French Catholic 'transcendentalism" of Robert Bresson and the Buddhist serenity of Yasujiro Ozu - backing them up with the torrid disco thrusts of Giorgio Moroder and Harry - all to tell the tale of religious redemption amid L.A.'s sexual sleaze. With Richard Gere as the male whore who travels through Hell and is saved by Love. Grim, disturbing, fascinating.
American Graffiti
Released: 1973
Rated: PG
Now Playing? No
The last night of summer, 1962. Four ex-high school buddies, who, without realizing it, are witnessing the end of an era, cruise through the nighttime L.A. streets, their various adventures and romances underscored by the ironic, frantic voice of DJ Wolfman Jack and the music of Chuck Berry, the Beach Boys and Bill Haley & the Comets. It's an ingeniously structured movie, and an almost flawless entertainment - miles superior to the TV rip-off show, "Happy Days." Incidentally, Johnny Milner, the drag-race king of American Graffiti, may die under the final credits, but in real life, the kid he was modeled after grew up to become writer-director John Milius. (M.W.)

American Pie
Released: 1999

This comedy scores some big laughs — most of them involving bodily fluids — while following the efforts of a group of high school guys to lose their virginity before prom. A rude, crude gross-out comedy with heart, it harks back to Porky's and There's Something About Mary — much better than the former, not as good as the latter. (K.W.)

Ralph Bakshi's ambitious animated history of American music as seen through the experience of four generations in an immigrant family. Imaginative, relentlessly downbeat, but somehow the rhythms don't catch fire and the melody dies.

The hormonally charged, now ex-teens of American Pie return with sweet-natured raunch via a class of '99 reunion storyline. It's laugh-out-loud funny in all the right ways. (M.S.)

Documentarian Nanette Burstein follows five Indiana high school seniors who could have come straight from Central Casting -- or The Breakfast Club. Burstein ultimately tells us nothing about senior year in the heartland of America that we didn't already know, but the film's insights about our media-soaked society are revelatory. (M.B.)
