Now in its 21st year, the Isthmus Jazz Festival is a two-day celebration of
America's homegrown art form. The free festival kicks off the summer season
in one of Madison's most beautiful outdoor settings, the Memorial Union
Terrace, with Lake Mendota as a glittering backdrop. A diverse crowd of
students, jazz aficionados and casual fans fill the tables to hear a lineup
that reflects a century's worth of jazz styles. Dixieland, big-band swing,
bebop, Latin jazz and free jazz are all part of the mix, along with
contemporary derivations like funk and hip-hop. The festival is committed to
honoring jazz's glorious tradition while keeping one eye fixed on the
future.

Latin Grammy Award winner David Sánchez, the 2009 Isthmus Jazz Festival headliner, is being hailed as the most
profound young tenor saxophonist working today. World-renowned jazz critic
Howard Reich saluted him, saying, "Technically, tonally and creatively, he
seems to have it all. His sound is plush, his pitch is unerring, his
rapid-fire playing is ravishing in its combination of speed, accuracy and
utter evenness of tone."
Born in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, Sánchez has played with musicians such as
Eddie Palmieri, Paquito D'Rivera, Dizzy Gillespie, Roy Haynes, Charlie
Haden, and Miriam Makeba.
In his music, Sanchez expands the frontiers of mainstream jazz to
incorporate a rich array of Afro-Latin influences. Says the Chicago Tribune,
"[Sanchez's] performance was as incendiary as it was intellectually
provocative."
