Jimmy the Groundhog will not be making a public appearance at Cannery Square in Sun Prairie on his big day, February 2.
As the Sun Prairie Chamber of Commerce noted in a Facebook update late Tuesday afternoon, the early morning ceremony at Cannery Square would be canceled if the Sun Prairie School District closes for the day. "Per our event policy, safety is our number one priority and when weather conditions are too severe/hazardous, the event will be canceled."
Indeed, all Sun Prairie schools will be closed on Wednesday due to a snow emergency, as relayed both via the district website and its phone hotline at 608-834-6500.
Barely an hour later, the cancellation was confirmed by Jimmy himself in another Facebook update. Given the near-ubiquitous spate of closings and cancellations this afternoon and evening, including classes at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, it was certain that Jimmy would prudently concur, and remain safely burrowed through the storm.
Fans of prognosticating woodchucks are encouraged to follow Jimmy the Groundhog and the Sun Prairie Chamber of Commerce on Facebook, or call the Groundhog Hotline at 608-837-4547 for updates on whatever his prediction for the rest of winter might be.
