Chancellor Donna Shalala's overhaul of the UW athletic department continues with the firing of head football coach Don Morton. "He is now destined to go down in the annals of UW football on the same mottled page as the ill-starred John Coatta," writes Isthmus sports columnist Fred Milverstedt. "This is harsh, but it's also reality." Having earlier fired athletic director Ade Sponberg, Shalala has tapped some of the brightest business and legal minds on campus to help assess the athletic program and fill key vacancies, while taking steps to boost fund-raising. Within months, she names Pat Richter athletic director and Barry Alvarez head football coach, ushering in a Badgers renaissance. Shalala leaves the UW in 1993 to become President Bill Clinton's secretary of Health and Human Services; she's now president of the University of Miami. Morton is now a Microsoft site leader in Fargo, N.D.
