When Minnie Pearl, star of the Grand Ole Opry and Hee Haw, first met Shelton Hank Williams — a.k.a. Hank Williams III — she thought she'd seen a ghost. Not only is he the spitting image of his grandfather, Hank Williams Sr., but he conjures the country music legend's voice, spirit and tendency toward excess.

Like his granddad, Hank III has struggled with alcoholism and marital strife, as well as the suits who call the shots in the recording industry. He's also made a name for himself as a honky-tonk artist, just as Hank Sr. did, but his up-yours attitude isn't just genetic. He got his start banging drums and bucking authority in punk bands, and he never exchanged his hardcore roots for cowboy boots. He manages to have both.

At his shows, after one set of honky-tonk and one that features a countrified version of heavy metal known as hellbilly, Hank makes mayhem with his uncouthly named punk-metal band Assjack. He also drums for Arson Anthem, a hardcore group that includes Pantera guitarist Phil Anselmo. In other words, though he's got country in his blood, he also owes some of his rebellious spirit to Cowboys From Hell and Henry Rollins, whom he's looked to for inspiration and collaboration.

Country in the blood is a powerful thing, though.

Despite rejecting what mainstream country seems to be about these days — pop melodies and expensive producers rather than hard living, hard drinking and hard-nosed responses to heartbreak — Hank III's songs still land on the country charts among hits by Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift.

Following a showdown, the über-mainstream Curb Records released Assjack's self-titled first CD this August, after making money off Hank's honky-tonk for 13 years. Filled with screaming, swearing and a ton of adrenaline — stuff that's out of the question for labelmates like Amy Grant — it's metal through and through, and the first major-label country album to earn the coveted parental advisory warning. Hank Sr. would be proud.

Wow.  Whoever wrote this:

Thank you for once again proving that the Madison music establishment does not, has not, and will not ever give a crap about or understand metal.

First, Phil Anselmo.  Was he really Pantera's guitarist?  Do you do any research at all?  Remember a guy who was murdered on stage a few years ago named Dimebag Darrell?  Who's guitar player was he?  And does Phil Anselmo play guitar at all?

Second, Hank III doesn't do anything metal.  Hellbilly is PUNK and country.  Hardcore punk, and country.  BTW, Henry Rollins  isn't metal either.  More like hardcore punk.  Black Flag = punk.

Why do you try and convince people that you understand or even know the first thing about metal, when it's painfully obvious that you don't?

Sorry to flame you, but as a musician in the Madison scene, who DOES NOT play metal btw, it really really irks me when poser ass writers try and comment on something they really have no understanding of.  Stick to reggae, or latin jazz,  or "indie" rock, or whatever the current "madisononian" standard of cool is.  Stop trying to pretend that you give a crap, or will ever give a crap about metal music and artists.  Either that, or start giving a crap, and tell your superiors to hire someone that gets it, or will at least do minimal research before PUBLISHING SOMETHING.  Christ.

Well JessPress, if it was indeed the editor that made that mistake, then mea culpa for jumping the gun.  But really, I have to disagree with you about assjack being anything close to metal. 3 local metal bands to check out, that definitely do play metal if you're curious (maybe the average music listener thinks assjack is metal, but chances are anyone reading this article isn't an average joe music listener): Dissent and Revolt, Lords of Discipline, Luna Mortis.  And yes, I did see that before you took it down.  I just think internet fights are lame.

What I meant by the madison music establishment:  Metal bands and hip hop have consistently been overlooked and underrated by journalists in madison.  Beyond that many hip hop and metal bands have trouble even getting shows.  No love for metal here.  Can't play at the terrace.  Union south closed with no replacement.  Klinic closed.  Nobody goes to the annex.  Etc...

You'll also have to excuse me for being touchy.  I've been misquoted, misrepresented, and misunderestimated (ha) by lots of journalists in lots of different places.  Tom Laskin and Scott Gordon are two of my favorites here.  Say hi to Joel for me. ;)
