There's no shortage of indie rock circulating in 2009. Most of it is dense, impressionistic and gently psychedelic.

That's not the road Built to Spill travel on their seventh full-length CD. Tracks such as "Life's a Dream" put the brakes on the tempo while maintaining the salience of verse-chorus-verse songwriting.

There Is No Enemy isn't soft through and through. "Planting Seeds" is breezy rock that's heavy on reflective optimism and occasional electric guitar growls.

But the slowest songs — "Nowhere Lullaby" and "Things Fall Apart" — are the best. They validate the confidence and maturity of this Boise, Idaho, band. They're ear candy for anyone who's got a soft spot for soft rock.
