T-mobile 200 mb/month free internet

Postby Beaver » Fri Nov 22, 2013 9:34 pm

Has anyone tried the T mobile 200 mb per month free internet plan yet? It is my understanding with any tablet with a SIM card you can get 200 mb per month free internet. Their site also talks about options for a postpaid or pay in advance customer, and I'm not quite clear what the differences would be or how they would work. Is that for people with voice plans also?

"Do I have to be on a plan or a contract in order to get the free data?

In order to get the 200 MB of free data per month, you need to activate a Mobile Internet account and register your tablet on our network. You don’t need to pay for an additional data plan.

If you are a postpaid customer, you’ll need to have an On Demand data plan at minimum which is $0/mo if you are a voice customer (after $10 line credit).

If you are a Pay in Advance customer, you’ll need to activate a Pay in Advance account. You do not have to a purchase data pass in order to access your free data.

Customers who want to finance their tablet and are well qualified can activate a Simple Choice Mobile Internet monthly plan with high speed data and will receive free 200MB data each month in addition to the data allocated from the plan."

I got this working and now have free 200mb/mo on my iPad generation 1. However, it is only 3G speed for me due to my old iPad and coverage area so it is slow. The browser is too slow to use but email is fast enough so I can use it for that. Supposedly, you get free 200mb of 4G if there is 4G coverage in your area and you have a 4G tablet. Check their coverage map (http://www.t-mobile.com/coverage.html). In Madison I see pockets of 4g areas: downtown, Maple Bluff, Shorewood Hills, far North East side, far South West side, etc. If you want to set up the free 200mb here is how.

1) First, you have to a tablet that is 3G or 4G capable and has a SIM card slot. Here is a list of suitable tablets. Pay attention to the model number because wifi only tablets won't work. I think any GSM tablet with a sim slot will work but I'm not sure:

2) Second, you need a SIM card that can be activated for T-mobile. Some tablets use micro-sim or nano-sim cards so make your have the right card. You can buy unactivated SIM cards from this Tmobile website for $10 normally, but sometimes they offer them for only $1, which they are doing now. They offer phone SIMs and Tablet or Hotspot SIMs. I don't know the difference and think either one will work with a tablet, but I would get a Tablet or Hotspot SIM to be safe:

Or you can buy SIM cards from this amazon seller. He is a Tmobile rep in NY. I got my micro-SIM card from him for $6:

3) Lastly, you need to call Tmobile support (1-800-866-2453) and ask them to activate your SIM card for the free 200mb. They will need the number on your SIM card and the MEI number of your tablet.

Here are some videos but I didn't find them very useful. My iPad settings weren't the same as described in the first video, maybe because I have an older model:

200MB/mo is not a lot. That's less than ten hours of normal web browsing or less than two hours of YouTube.

As I said, I just have 3G so only use this for email and 200 mb is plenty for that. If I had 4G, 200mb would be enough for some web browsing but not youtube.

What can you do with 200mb?

"A 200 MB data plan would cover in one month: 1,000 text emails, 50 emails with photo attachments, 150 emails with other attachments, 60 social media posts with photos uploaded, and 500 Web pages viewed."
