Socialist Slurpie Sizing Scheme Skewered

Nanny Bloomberg's plan to turn NYC into North Korea-light goes off track:

Judge blocks New York City large-soda ban, Mayor Bloomberg vows fight

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg vowed on Monday to appeal a judge's ruling that struck down his pioneering ban on large sugary drinks sold by the city's restaurants, movie theaters and other food service businesses just a day before it was to take effect.

The judge called the ban "arbitrary and capricious" in an 11th-hour decision that dealt a serious blow to Bloomberg, who has made public health a cornerstone of his administration, with laws prohibiting smoking in restaurants, bars and parks; banning trans fats; and requiring chain restaurants to post calorie counts

Socialism is an economic system characterized by public ownership of the means of production. What is socialist about this public health initiative?

Whereas arbitrary and capricious management of love, marriage, sexuality, and childbirth via bans, prohibitions, mandates, and requirements = freedom. Did I get that right, oh Moderate One?

What if some are too skinny? Should they be required to partake of fat and sugary drinks?

But requiring and banning are different, so I suppose not.

Which specific bans, prohibitions, mandates and requirements are you thinking of?

Oh, I dunno -- the phrase "trans-vaginal ultrasound" ring a bell, for starters?

Or how about a constitutional amendment banning marriage between consenting adults?

Seems to me these are slightly bigger assaults on individual freedom than a regulation on huge sugary drinks (which, after all, would have a net positive affect on public health expenditures).

Meaning what? That an assault on freedom is alright, as long as it is slightly smaller than your arbitrary cutoff?

Isn't that like saying, it is ok to steal from someone as long as you only take small change?

It's not an economic decision.

Stu, I agree. Right-wing socialism is no better than left-wing socialism.

@wack wack, if it isn't economic, what is it?

You really don't grasp the concept here, do you, Lawrence?

Socialism is an economic concept. It is not a synonym for government intervention or intrusion into individual's personal behavior (unless that personal behavior is owning power plants).

So do you think we should get rid of any and all regulations that exist? If not, where is YOUR arbitrary cut off.

That said, I do think Bloomberg went too far. As much as I sympathize with the issue and think it's a problem, I also feel like there are more important things that could be done.
