Will downtown zone bars out of existence?

Postby Dulouz » Wed May 14, 2008 7:28 pm

The City has announced an ambitious project to re-write the zoning code.

The Capitol Neighborhoods Inc's Alcohol Issues Task Force is on record in support of re-zoning the downtown as "residential neighborhood after 6 p.m. or maybe it is 8 p.m.). This would effectively mean all commercial enterprises, including taverns and restaurants, must close at the time that CNI declares it a neighborhood instead of a commercial district.

This seems to be their moment. They just got one of their own on the ALRC. The city is wracked with fear over 3 unsolved downtown murders and frustration with a police department more interested in obfuscation than justice, and the war on homelessness has reached a fevered peak. What will the Madison economy be like if the entertainment and dining district is forced away from students and their billion plus economy?

May you live in interesting times!

Interesting. I read the press release, and of course, there are no ominous details included. I just don't think it would be feasible to change the zoning code that drastically is any fashion, at least without major grandfathering.

Anyway, I did a little more digging, and I found a statement from the project manager.

Isn't it interesting that the most liberal of our residents (broad brush stroke here) have become the most prude, conservative, tight ass, holier-than-thou uptighties in their middle to old age. Tell me they didn't rebel against their parents or have a little fun in the olden days.

Wow! The notion that UW students would participate in any kind on dining environment, let alone a billion-dollar one, boggles the mind. But I see your point. Maybe we should cut to the chase and focus on the high-school market, or better yet, the emerging pre-school fashion industry! There's a cause Iraqi children could rally to!

I don't believe it. If you have a source for this, post it.
