Catching a bike thief. Downtown Madison

If it's news, but not politics, then it goes here.

I've seen a bike with fat tires like that in the Willy St/Jenifer St neighborhood but it's always been after sunset and I didn't see what color it was.

Now that I think about it, it was always on Jenifer within a couple blocks of the Market.

There must be lookalikes, because it isn't that long since he had the bike stolen.

But posting the picture was a good idea, because every time I passed a bike rack I scanned it and I bet half a dozen other people did the same, wherever they walked.

CCAP doesn't show any theft charges for someone of that name, just a drug paraphernalia charge. These kind of crimes don't really result in the criminal facing any consequences...too few DAs I guess. In a just world he'd stay in jail a couple months till he'd paid for your Trek with his prison wages.

I'm pushing with the DA's office to get something going. The police told me he was a repeat offender so the one charge doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I was told the only course of action that may result in anything is having him put on probation but the terms of that are giving me a set amount of money each month ... restitution wouldn't really help in this case. :( But I'm determined to get this bike back still.

As it stands now it appears you can steal a bike, get caught, confess to it, lie to the police, more than likely not show up for court, and just keep walking around as if nothing really happened because "he doesn't have any money" ... yet he has enough to purchase and use a Mobile phone.

SO glad I could leave my bike locked up in downtown garage for him to steal and fund his homeless lifestyle. Lazy piece of shit.

Who? The police? City government? Or do you mean the thief?

Anyway, thanks for the update. Sorry your bike was stolen. And now your time, it seems.

I thought Madison was supposed to want to become a Bike City... a bike mecca... a destination.

kmgsft, you should go to a Madison City Council meeting, register, and tell your story.

The police have been great about all of this so far. I couldn't ask for more in that area. It has to be 10 times more frustrating for them to have to let someone walk around that they know is guilty because of the system. I'm still determined to get this bike back. Its amazing to me how many people in the homeless community knows who this guy is .. even they don't like him.

The bike has been found!!! Thank you to Bryan B for noticing it walking into the Goodwill on the East side of Madison. He received the $150 reward last night and we have the bike back!

Jonathan James sold it to someone for $20 about 3 weeks ago and he's been on it ever since. He was very helpful in returning it. Anyone thats had a bike stolen just hang in there! You may just get lucky.

Excellent! Is Bryan B a member of TDPF? I hope so. Glad you got your bike back, kmgsft.

1. I’m also glad you got your bike back, like Pee Wee did:

This scene is better, tho, in my opinion. It really shows his love for his bike.

2. Unrelated, but a funny part of the movie:

Francis: Today's my birthday and my father says I can have anything I want.
Pee-wee: Good for you and your father.
Francis: So guess what I want.
Pee-wee: A new brain.
Francis: No. Your bike!
[Pee-wee laughs on the ground]
Francis: What's so funny, Pee-wee?
Pee-wee: [gets back on his feet] It's not for sale, Francis!
Francis: My father says everything's negotiable, Pee-wee.
Pee-wee: I wouldn't sell my bike for all the money in the world. Not for 100 billion-million-TRILLION dollars!
Francis: Then you're crazy!
Pee-wee: I know you are, but what am I?
Francis: You're a nerd!
Pee-wee: I know you are, but what am I?
Francis: You're an idiot!
Pee-wee: I know you are, but what am I?
Pee-wee and Francis: I know you are, but what am I?! I know you are, but what am I?! I know you are, but what am I?! I know you are, but what am I?! I know you are, but what am I?!
Pee-wee: Infinity!
Francis: No. I'm not.
Both: You are! No way! Knock it off! Cut it out!
Francis: Oh, shut up, Pee-wee!
Pee-wee: Why don't you make me?
Francis: Why don't you make me?
Pee-wee: Because I don't make monkeys. I just train 'em!
Francis: Come on, Pee-wee. Listen to reason!
[Pee-wee puts his hand beside his left ear]
Francis: Come on!
Pee-wee: Shh! I'm listening to reason.
Francis: Pee-wee!
Pee-wee: That's my name. Don't wear it out!
Francis: Remember the first time I saw your bike? You were riding past my house, and I came running out to tell you how much I liked it even way back then?
Pee-wee: I love that story.

3. Just a random part of the movie (or snot):

Pee-wee: [holding a pen] Exhibit "D"! Jimmy, what is this - too late! Chip?
Chip: Uh... it looks like a pen.
Pee-wee: Exactly! I bought this pen one hour before my bike was stolen. Why? What's the significance? I don't know!

Just called to check in to see what the punishment was for Mr Jonathan James. He got a ticket for bike theft. NO RESTITUTION was ordered despite 2 emails and 3 phone calls to the Municipal Court well before the hearing date. Its possible they missed it somehow but as of right now I'm furious.

Looks like you'll need to take justice into your own hands...

Good to hear, though it's hard to imagine this dirtball actually coming up with the money.
