New posts vs. active topics

Postby jjoyce » Thu Feb 28, 2013 3:45 pm

There are two pages on this board that get a lot of traffic. They are...

"View new posts": search.php?search_id=newposts

"View active topics": search.php?search_id=active_topics

So which sort of Foron are you? New or Active? Does this tell us anything about your personality?

After with rake over this a bit, I'll reveal which is the more popular of the two.

New posts since I'm logged in most of the time. If I'm not then I can only do active topics. And, If i'm logged in, I have to go back to the board index to click the "active topics" button where as the "new posts" link is right at the top. The one thing about "new posts" I don't like is that it is sometimes selective as to what it considers "new." Unless of course there is some formula I'm missing.

Active, but I didn't know about the new posts link. It looks like it's the same functionality basically, instead of listing the X most recent threads with new posts, it lists only those threads with new posts since the last visit? No, that can't be. I have no idea.

If it's been a good awhile since I've visited the forum, I'll do Active Topics. If it's only been a week or less, I'll do New Posts.

Active.

Which is funny, as my constant clicking on that bookmark pretty much means I am not actually being active.

And by funny, I mean sad.

I pretty much only look at the FORUM tab anymore. The Forum: Madison's talking about:

I am sure I miss some posts, but it is what I do.

Umm..... I look at the last posts on the index page and if they're new I click through to investigate further. Par for the course I guess.

You could make an analogy with nightlife:

Some people just want to know what the most popular new spots are. (Active)

Others want to know exactly who is hanging out a these new places. (New posts)

Myself, I prefer to go into each and every establishment just to make sure the ice is cold and the olives are fresh.

Active only. The 'new posts' link hits a login wall.
