The NYT has a long and fascinating story
about John McAfee, who is currently in hiding after being sought by Belize authorities for questioning in a murder case. It's been in the news for a while, but the Times story
is a nice summary of the case, with a lot of fascinating background thrown in.
The story seems to involve an American software-industry millionaire, his tropical island compound, a murdered neighbor, poisoned dogs, prostitution, psychoactive drugs, elaborate and not-so-elaborate hoaxes, a biotech-industry startup, a quest to develop new antibiotics (or, allegedly, a new "herbal version of Viagra for women"), accusations of government corruption, speculation about drug-induced paranoia and psychosis ... and much, much more.
If somebody brought you this guy's life story as a movie proposal, you'd probably turn it down as too implausible.
