Gyros, Burrito, and Ribs

Where are you eating and what do you think? What's opening, closing, succeeding, failing?

Gyros, Burrito, and Ribs

Favorite gyros in town? Very sad Atlantis Taverna limited lunch.

Favorite burrito in town? La Hacienda (no beans) at the top of my list after all these years.

I don't agree with all he says but this site is feeding the fire to fuel the fever: http://amazingribs.com/

Not sure if it is a "real" gyro, but if you get the gyro meal with extra meat, you could probably buy some of your own pitas and split the thing 3 ways. It is at least served by a real Greek, and I know Gus would be happy to call you a Malaka.

Trader Gus' is on my way home from work, so I end up getting gyros there fairly often. The ambiance is a bit lacking, so I get takeout. Best gyros I've ever had, and Gus and the staff are always friendly.

Is there any local place with good ribs (smoked for hours over hickory with a great rub)? Porky Pine Petes as well as Big Mama and Uncle Fats are now long gone. I did read that Smoky Jon's won a national contest with their Cajun rub. Has anyone tried that?

We live on the northside, so while not on my way home, Trader Gus' is the closest gyro purveyor, and I have never been anything but satisfied. I usually can't resist grabbing a bargain chunk of feta from the deli case when I get takeout.

Bonus Round: While the gyros themselves aren't so great, there are a couple family restaurants around town (imagine an independent Perkins, if ya don't know) owned by Macedonians (I think, sorry if I am starting a conflict) that serve a gyro omelette. The Northside Family Restaurant is one, there is another close to the Fish Hatchery exit on the Beltline, the name escapes me. If done correctly, it will force a Sunday afternoon nap.

As far as ribs go, I avoided Famous Dave's for a long time, but I finally submitted, on vacation with friends. I have to admit, I really enjoyed the rib tips, and they seemed almost as good as the first time when I tried them locally. Avoid their sauce though; while tasty, I discovered afterwards the main ingredient is HFCS.

I feel like you're missing the most important type of food here.

You're absolutely right. How stupid--we've totally forgotten about pasta!

I almost started crying here, but then the internet cheered me right up.

You can get a nice gyros omelet at the Dairyland Cafe on Cottage Grove.

I haven't tried the burritos yet, but I've been pleased with the food at the oddly-named Happy Grill. The first time I went I had the mole--the chicken itself wasn't so hot (it was pretty overcooked), but the mole itself was amazing. The last couple times I've gone I've had the enchiladas sonoras, which is even better.

The service is pretty erratic, though. Last time my boyfriend and I were there, we had a waitress who seemed to speak neither English or Spanish (we ended up ordering by pointing at the menu, and she wrote it down letter-by-letter).

Anyhow, I'll try a burrito next time I'm there.
And the Northside Family Restaurant makes a pretty mean gyros omelettte , too.

Owners are Asian (Chinese?). The term happy has cultural significance.
