What was Ragstock?

What are the things that puzzle, enrage, delight and tickle you as you go about your life in Madison?

What was Ragstock?

Postby Bwis53 » Mon Apr 25, 2011 6:26 pm

I was in Ragstock today. As I wandered through I marveled at it's old funkiness. Does anyone know what was in that building in the 70's and 80's?

I'm pretty sure Ragstock was in the same building in the early '80's when I arrived in Madison. Before that, I have no idea.

I seem to recall a pet shop on the left side. I just can't remember the larger right side.

The pet shop!

I'd complete forgotten about that. Something cute and cuddly in the window and a couple kids and and one or two smiling stoners in front of it.

The pet shop (Fur Fin and Feather?) was torn down to make way for the Gap, along with a Name of the Game or a boutique (maybe?) in the late 90s.

the pet shop was definitely fur fin and feather. I was kind of glad to see it go because i always pictured students getting pets on impulse and getting tired of them in 2 weeks.

not sure about ragstock its the only thing i remember there.

Was the larger part an Ella's Deli? There used to be one on that side of State, but I can't remember its exact location. I do remember Fur Fin & Feather.

Ella's Deli is now Hawk's, I think it was something in between there. (It may not even be Hawk's anymore?)

Hawk's is still across from Peace Park, doing just fine by all indications.

Yup. Hawk's is doing fine. It was Cafeli before that (and after Ella's).

Cafeli! I couldn't remember that name. I seem to remember that place was not so great.
And I don't doubt Hawk's is doing fine, it's just in that awkward in between area of State Street that I never seem to get to, and a lot of places down there seem to come and go like the wind....

I remember Ella's from the 60s and 70s. By far the worst restrooms on State Street. And that's saying a lot. Down in the basement, of course.

the left-hand side of current ragstock was, indeed, fur fin and feather; i bought a cat there, to my eternal shame. the right hand side was ragstock as far back as the mid-80s; i was in high school in sun prairie, and that was THE place to go to for clothing that made you look like you didn't live in sun prairie. the space that is currently the gap was, i think, once home to zaritas, a mexican place. ella's occupied the space that is now hawk's for as long as i can remember.

I have to ask: was the cat equally shamed? Or was s/he reconciled to just doing a good deed, and then moving on?

Did the Gap development and Ragstock taking over the pet shop space all happen around the same time? (Please say yes to comfort my old, and apparently addled, mind.)
