Malapropisms that need stopped

If it doesn't fit anywhere else, it fits here

Postby Henry Vilas » Fri Oct 26, 2007 11:19 am

This concerns writing, rather than speaking. Alot is not a word. It's two words: a lot.

Myself instead of me or I.

That one makes me want to smack the speaker.

"Chipolte". Sorry, joey.

"Chipoltle" also irks me, although it's cute that the marquee at the McDonalds on 41 in Oshkosh is at least trying.

Not a malapropism but an ugly neologism: incentivize. (Doubly embarrassing when spoken while wearing a business suit.)

I'll give the president a pass this time, because he was probably shrewdly addressing business people who don't know any better. But still ... yech!

there's a couple cliches that get on my nerves,
"don't go there" and "not so much"

Let's try "athleticism." And someone who corrects your statement with "actually, it's like this." This one really aggravates
my husband.

"Vegetarian," as describing someone who eats fish or chicken.

"Good-paying jobs." Mayor Dave says it in this week's Isthmus essay on the Edgewater. It's a folksy, pretend-ignorant conflation of "good jobs" with "well-paying jobs."

Politicians can be divided into those who say "good-paying jobs" and those who say "well-paying jobs." "Good-paying" is phony populism, used by people who know better. They would never be caught saying that someone was "paid good."

"Good-paying jobs" are defined as those that can pay the bills -- as opposed to "shit jobs," which are Madison's specialty.
