Sick of Dowtown Bars...Suggestions?

Bars, wine, beer, cocktails, drunken escapades

It is not fun to be around a group of 21/22 year olds (especially males) when alcohol is involved, when one is no longer a 21/22 year old.

I was going to suggest a Willy St. romp. You may need cab money though.

I wish I was still trying to duplicate my college days in my 30s. That decade is also well behind me.

It's not college kids I'm hostile to. It's college bars, that seem to turn even the smartest 20-something into a moron.

Of course, even 50-somethings (or older) can become morons in bars, hence my (joking) suggestion that the OP may need to act like a different kind of moron. ;)

I don't think anyone's asked this yet, so what are your group's priorities for having a good time at a bar? Cheap drinks? Good beer? Food? Live music (probably not, considering your regular routine)? Hot bartenders/patrons? Good jukebox? Dancing? Walking distance from home?

I understand that this may not specifically apply to you or your friends, but what seems to be the vast majority of college students in bars consist of either
a) sweaty dudes doused in Axe body spray wearing backwards hats who inexplicably feel the need to randomly yell out things like "yeah, dude!" and give each other high fives for no reason while slamming drinks and making crude comments about every female in the place

b) chicks in Andre the Giant shirts (those stupid one-shoulder ones) with muffin tops and plumber's crack who inexplicably feel the need to yell "woo!" at random times while slamming drinks and rubbing up against every sweaty college dude in the place (see example a)

In a nutshell, college students (again, I realize this is a broad generalization, but let's face it, I'm not wrong here) are obnoxious, loud, extremely drunk, and listen to crappy music. Those of us who are older prefer to avoid them and go to places where we can hang out with our friends, have a few drinks (and not get those drinks spilled all over us by drunken frat boys), and maybe listen to some good music.

So if you and your friends don't fit into categories a or b, feel free to try new bars and do your part to dispel the stereotypes. If you do fit into those categories, please stick to State Street and leave the rest of us in peace.

Well-met, but I was happy as a clam at high tide when I posted that. No anger at all!

Free advice, worth nothing (or less).

Start the evening at Genna's with a nice cocktail, a gin & tonic or a martini, maybe you'll get an outdoor table. You could also do this at Tornado. Move down to the Paradise for your cheap beer/rail drink fix and some rock on the jukebox. Then check out The Frequency, there is no cover charge in the front room, you can see who is playing and decide if you want to spend a few bucks to see them. Hit the Silver Dollar on W. Mifflin on your way home - its right off the top of State Street. Then its either Ian's in the former porn shop or Parthenon for a late night snack.

Not sure if you and your friends are into music, but it's also worth noting that the jukebox at Genna's is really eclectic.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned Kushi Bar Muramoto or any of the other great King Street vicinity bars in this thread (Natt Spil, Argus, Maduro, The Local, Opus, et al.)

Kushi's my favorite bar as of late-- it has amazing inventive cocktails and a relatively inexpensive tapas menu, plus its laidback cool atmosphere is well-suited for a girls' night out. It's not far from Genna's. Natt Spil can get really packed but has good food and nightly DJs. Maduro is classy and the bartenders are all really great. and so on.

Get on your bikes and head towards Willy St.

Stop at the Willy St. Pub. Order a bloody mary or a martini. They make the best in town.

Next, head north east on Willy, keep going until the road forks a bit, keep going on Winnebago, and stop at The Ideal, on your left. Ask to try their best wine. It's actually pretty inexpensive, so don't worry about asking for the most expensive thing.

After that, head towards Atwood and hit the Ohio Taven at Atwood and Ohio. The specialty there is live entertainment. They are also capable of making a mean mojito. Don't be afraid to ask.

The only problem I can see with riding bikes this far is the lack of up to code bike racks at each of these establishments. Good luck.

I'm going to re-formulate some of these into a post on The Daily.

Objections?

Scatz is perfect for the 21ish crowd.

It's actually not a bad place to see a band. Elevated stage, great sound, plenty of room in the club.

you could also hit up the "bar mall" as my friends and I sometimes call it-- catch the 2-for-1 happy hour at High Noon Saloon, have snacks/drinks/play pool at Brass Ring, go to the Brink or back to High Noon for live music...

Plus, I hear Vanilla Ice has a weekly Tuesday night gig.

Can't beleive nobody has mentioned the Weary Traveller for dinner and drinks, a trek to Jolly Bob's for some dancing and tropical paradise, and the Crystal Corner for some live music. Fun Willy St. route that seems to accommodate all ages. Enjoy!
