Pims Cups

Postby jjoyce » Wed Aug 01, 2007 9:58 am

I'm afraid to order one, thinking I'd maybe hate it and look like a pretentious doofus in the process.

Anyone actually had one? I mean, in a bar or restaurant? Does anyone make a plausible version locally?

First, you would need the Pimms. I very seriously doubt this is carried by any restaurant or bar in Madison. Maybe one of those fake-ass "Irish Pubs" has it (doubtful).

But I drink these in London only, so who knows.

For edification, the recipe for a Pimms #1 (you may have better luck with a #3, using brandy--The Old Fashioned?):

1 slice per person of: orange, lemon, apple, cucumber
1 sprig of mint
2 parts English lemonade (if unavailable, ginger ale may be used) to 1 part Pimms

## Edit: oh yeah, and GIN.

---

Pimms is the brand name of a tonic that became the base for this series of "cups."

I've seen Pimm's #1 around a few places in town. Stumble over to the Local and you'll likely find it there.

Had my first Pimm's Cup at Napolean House in New Orleans the May before Katrina. Who would have thought cucumber in a drink would be so tasty?

You've obviously never had Hendrick's.

I once had a Pimm's Cup at Genna's. Not sure if it was a special or if it is part of their regular drink menu.

pimms is just caramelized gin, if i'm correct. they have it genna's on the regular. they have it at a number of other nice establishments around town. as for it being trendy? i think that ended a couple years ago.

We make Pimm's cups at Genna's every day of the week but our house recipe reduces the garnishes to a mere orange slice, lime wedge, and cucumber spear. Hey, times are tight!

That's what I said right before my first Screaming Viking.
