Should Floyd be outed?

Postby Brenda Konkel » Fri Aug 11, 2006 3:54 pm

If you knew who Floyd was, would you post it on this message board? If nothing else, so that he is embarrassed about what he posted and make this madness stop?

Nope, I believe people have the right to anonymity on message boards if they so desire

No, that would be highly immoral.

This post only shows what a pathetic person you are.

I hope you soon realize this and resign from public life to focus on rebuilding your self esteem; so that you will come to realize the embarassment that I feel for our city when one of our local elected officals acts in this manner.

You already did. When he first started posting and attacking you, you gave a couple hints about him, including his first name. I used my google skills to find him. I have even called him by his initials in a response to one of his posts and once I obliquely made reference to his true profession.

When Daisy was outed, not only to his true gender, but also to his real identity, he handled it well. Some forons were outraged over the revelation of his true name, but he was a semi-public figure, same as Floyd.

I chose not to reveal Floyd's full name and I vote not to out him.

Don't do it Brenda.

Although I find him highly annoying, and even rude at times, I don't think unmasking him would be a good idea.

I figured out his identity almost the moment he started posting, because we had received emails from him with that distinctive writing style.

But if you are determined to embarrass him, dropping some hints about his political connections could be just as useful, since most people probably wouldn't recognize his name.

Still, I am of the opinion that all Forons deserve anonymity, if they desire it.

I bet it would be funny if everyone knew Floyd was actually Billy Joel, now wouldn't it.

I do not think there is anything unethical in revealing a foron's true identity. I routinely outed MisterBlues when he would make up those silly usernames thinking that somehow it was so clever. And it gave me a chance to write "blow it out your ass" which I always enjoy. After all a person can always deny that they are who we think they are.

I just did a search on google using the search term "Madison WI and BJ" and the "WSJ retribution" thread was second on the list. Looks like a lot of people want to know who Floyd is.

I thought college porn sites would dominate that search, but I was way off.

By asking a question? I asked a question - I didn't "out" Floyd. I asked if people would. I could have "outed" Floyd for years now and haven't. Tho I've been tempted many a time . . .

Does that mean my identity is more sought after than college porn?

Can we move onto speculation about the secret ingredient in the Colonel's recipe now? I am not really that interested in finding out who I am after all these years.

There is nothing immoral about outing someone who posts here. There is no "right" to anonymity on a public message board.

In fact, if I were Jason, I would prevent anyone from posting anonymously. But that is me. In my opinion, if someone believes something enough to publish it, they should believe it enough to be connected to it. Anonymous people who take the time to come to a place like this and snipe at people who have freely made themselves known have no place at the table.

So, I say out him/her/it.

Con: It's not going to be very satisfying if Floyd turns out to be a nobody like 95% of the rest of us. "Floyd is Jane Doe! Woo hoo!"

Pro: She seems to be uncomfortable with the idea of getting outed, which would make it all the more fun since she obviously loves making other people uncomfortable and puts considerable time and effort into doing so.

Perhaps she's in a line of work where she'd regret having her name attached to all the royal-jerk stuff she's posted here. Pro or con? You decide.

Other questions: She made it personal, attacking someone personally. Is it therefore fair to unmask her and even things up? Or are there different rules for public figures and nonentities, as in other legal areas?

Is she still covered by the forum standing argeement you can anonymously maintain as many identities as you want as long as you don't cross The Line? Has she crossed it? Can it be crossed without threatening to beat the crap out of people?

If people were out for blood they could do the outing one slow, painful bit at a time: She drives a (whatever). She ate lunch at (wherever). We saw her at (West Towne, Woodmans, wherever). She got a new hairdo and the color is all wrong. Where did she get that dress? Did you see what she wrote at ?

But that would be mean. I think she just had a bad week and needs more rest.
