A Question for John Hughes

Postby crevice beatle » Mon Jun 01, 2009 9:54 pm

I wondering if any forons out there can help settle (or add fuel) to a fiery debate my buddy and I are having concerning the movie "The Breakfast Club."

What posistion does actor Paul Gleason who plays Richard Vernon hold at Sherman Highschool?
I, and most people I know always assume he is playing the principal of the highschool. My friend insists he is merely a teacher who is taking on the weekend duty of babysitting the delinquents...that, or he is specifically a disciplinary officer... or at most, vice principal - but definately not principal.

We have looked up varying sources from Imdb to Wikapedia to random film forums...and we can not get a concrete answer - different sites suggest different things and they all seem to be written by fans.

What's your take??? And how would you back up your claim?

I assumed he was the principal - I remember a scene in the movie where he was in his office (and high school teachers don't generally have offices)

This link should settle it for ya

on another note: am I the only one who noticed this?

I can't help it, I love speculating about stuff like this.

I had always assumed either principal or vice-principal. In fact, it wasn't until your post that it occurred to me: WTF would a school principal be doing at the school on a Saturday overseeing a weekend detention?

So I need to revise my guess to teacher who (choose all that apply): drew the short straw / had his turn in the rotation / is just sadistic enough to like this responsibility / like Ally Sheedy's character, decided he had nothing better to do.

Perhaps a school in a well-off suburb like Shermer is able to scrape up some offices for their teachers to share, like MATC does, a few teachers to an office. (Sorry, that's all I've got on that one.)

I'm siding with two possibilities:

1. Teacher who makes extra cash supervising detention.

2. Vice principal.

Remember, he personally hands out extra weeks ("I got ya for two. Two months."), implying that he's the man on Saturdays.

My vote is for vice principal. When Brian pens the note for the Breakfast Club, he adresses it Mr. Vernon, not Principal. This may be a sign of a lack of respect, but in high school, I always referred to the head man as Principal and the VP's as Mr./Mrs.

Also, would it be against policy for a Principal to look into the personal records of students?

I always assumed he was just some lackey teacher.
He was looking up personal records of other teachers when he gets busted by Carl "Lennon" el Janitor. I would think a prinicipal might have legitimate access to that stuff.
Nice catch on the movie posters, FlyOver G!
The next time I have to come in here I'm crackin' skulls.

Yeah, that definitely wasn't his office.

I believe Jeff has our answer. This description of Dean of Students certainly fits Vernon.

Not so sure, that script has different names for many of the characters, including Vernon's first name. But if it is an original script, then we know he was intended to be DoS.

Makes sense. Hughes clearly has a thing about Deans of Students. (See Rooney, Ed, Ferris Bueller's Day Off)

I still think it odd that someone at that level would have regular Saturday hours, and (per O.J.) how would a DofS not have clearance to examine student records?

But when you start going down that road while watching movies, you may as well start wondering why Jake and Elwood had to scrape together property tax money for a church orphanage.

(School File Room)
(Vernon is glancing through the confidential files in the school basement.)
Vernon: (to himself) Mister, oh mister Tearney...a history of slight mental illness? Wooh, no wonder he's so fucked up!
(Carl enters.)
Carl: Afternoon, Dick...
Vernon: Hey Carl, how you doin'?
Carl: Good.
Vernon: Good, what's up?
Carl: Not much, what's happening. What are you doing in the basement files?
Vernon: Oh, nothin' nothin' here. I'm just doin' a little homework here.
Carl: Homework, huh?
Vernon: Yeah.
(Carl, laughing, comes over and looks at the files that Vernon was looking at.)
Carl: Confidential files...hmmm?
Vernon: Look, Carl...this is a highly sensitive area and I, I tell you something...certain people would be very, very embarrassed. I would really appreciate it if this would be something that, that you and I could keep between us.
Carl: What're you gonna do for me, man?
Vernon: Well, well what would you like?
Carl: Got fifty bucks?
Vernon: What?
Carl: Fifty bucks.
