If it doesn't fit anywhere else, it fits here

E. Wilson St. - Question

Postby bystander » Fri Jul 13, 2007 11:47 am

Are there a lot of people living in their cars on E. Wilson St.? Just curious.

It's their fault we have all these unsold condos.

Well... I know I'm not.Sure, sure, I'm living in my car - just not on East Wilson. Well, not all the time at least - i mean sometimes I'm on East Wilson but sometimes not so much. That's the beauty of living in one's car - at least until it breaks down real good. Know what I mean?? I think you do.

Yes. The city seems to turn a blind eye towards that section of road but I'm not sure why. I'm guessing once Central Park gets completed it will be a different story.

As long as I have lived in Madison the section of East Wilson between Ingersoll and Baldwin has been the de facto spot for car campers. I'm pretty sure I heard that the cops check and make sure they move the location of their vehicles every two weeks, and otherwise leave them alone.

It seems like a pretty good arrangement. I'm through there all the time and I've never had any trouble with any of the campers. It's a different group than the Law Park / Willy Street Park / Demetral Shelter beer party crowd. It's in their best interests to keep the peace.

Seattle has a similar deal with the north side of the Ballard ship channel - or at least it used to; I'm not in Seattle as much as I once was, so I don't know for sure.

Homeless people have to go somewhere, when the shelters are full-up, now don't they? I wish there was a good alternative. I mean really, where are these people supposed to go? As long as they're not bothering anyone, I have no problem with car campers.

There's construction in the old Badger Cab location, and they've moved those big cement barriers along the street. There is less parking there now. Not sure where some of them went. It seems to be tolerated on the east side.

I wonder where they go when they need to wee. Well, I don't wonder, I just wonder how often. :?

I understand, and I've seen camping vans, in Walmart parking lots. Wouldn't that be poetic justice?

Would they be allowed near or around government buildings?

I can't wait to see them riding the trolly!

I doubt the downtown elite would tolerate vagrants riding in their boutique "mass transit" system.

So how would they be kept out, "legally", other than making them so pricey, like our condos, that only those of a certain class could ride?

It's my understanding that walmart actively welcomes campers in their parking lots, at least on an overnight basis, assuming that they will get some business out of it.

I'll bet the future residents of the badger cab property development won't be as cool with the campers as the city is now.
