No, I haven't. Where do you get these leaps? A flair for self promotion and a propensity to pander do not equal charlatanism.

Huckleby wrote:I see. You believe that "political correctness" is a false accusasion leveled only by racists, sexists and homophobes.

Whoa, where's the love for purpose #2? It's right there in my post after purpose #1, in case you missed it.

Yes. I am interested in what opinions you hold that run against the liberal grain here in Madison.

"The liberal grain here in Madison" is your premise. Most of the people I know, liberal and conservative, are multigrain. So I'll just list a bunch of opinions and you can sort the PC wheat from the (what's the opposite?) chaff. It's long, to give you a decent selection... might help to hum Sir Edward Elgar as you read it.

The Big Three of bigotry, racism/sexism/homophobia, make my skin crawl. Interestingly, homophobia most of all, maybe because I can't say "Well, yes, I've experienced those feelings myself."

I own two handguns and three shotguns, which is a lot for the isthmus. (The land mass, not the paper.) I love to shoot, but guns for personal protection are ridiculously wrongheaded, and Stand Your Ground/Castle Doctrine laws are do-it-yourself capital punishment, total bullshit. Don't have my concealed carry permit but plan to get it, mainly because my husband, who's gotten his, reports: "You won't BELIEVE what you can shoot someone for. It'll horrify you."

I used to say retard and retarded without a second thought, until I reconnected with a friend on Facebook who has a son with Down Syndrome and whose daughter did a piece for Spread the Word to End the Word. It still slips out sometimes, but less and less often. Still use fucktard, lametard, and dicktard, which is probably cheating.

Porn and prostitution are positive sexual outlets in principle, though there are BIG problems in practice, primarily but not exclusively for women. If we didn't live in such a fucked up culture that oscillates between prudish and salacious, we could deal with those problems much more effectively.

The War on Drugs is a bloody and immoral waste of money.

My motorcycle gets lower gas mileage than many cars, and I've spent more time in deep triple digits on taxpayer-funded county roads than any tree-hugging greenie has a right to.

Hunting is fine, don't know that I could shoot a deer, though.

I can say cunt, but if you say it (as a man) I'll think you're a total cunt.

The metaphorical strong kid picking on the weak kid is just about the ugliest thing there is.

Second ugliest: the strong kid telling the weak kid to suck it up and fix his problems, especially when the strong kid has had advantages the weak kid can't even dream of.

I hate willful ignorance, and I hate the people and organizations that perpetuate and play on it. I'm looking at you, Americans for Prosperity and Fox News. What a bunch of monumental douchebags who've snowed a whole segment of the population for their own financial and political gain.

If you don't know who Ira Flatow is, I'll think less of you. If you know and who he is and don't like him, I'll think you're an irredeemable idiot.

I can't believe the citizenry isn't rioting in the streets over Citizens United. What is wrong with us?

I spend a fair amount of time treading water in Mendota in the summer, so I think people who fertilize their lawns deserve a poop sandwich. But I blast my porches with bug killer every couple months starting in early spring, which I suppose isn't the greenest practice. If I don't, we can hardly make it to the grill through the spiderwebs come August.

I love incandescent bulbs more than I love the earth.

One of my favorite things in the world is the old guys who call in to WPR while they're out working in the field up nort', and in their cheddar-thick accents let fly with a progressive tirade that would make Fightin' Bob swell with pride. And then of course the next call is about creeping charlie.

Speaking of WPR, the Wisconsin Idea is an amazing concept that makes me very proud of my state.

I'll say fireman when I'm talking about a guy and firefighter when I'm talking about the generic or a woman. I wish we had a gender neutral pronoun, but in its absence I almost always say him instead of him/her, and I never say them (unless by accident), because grammatical correctness trumps inclusive language in my book.

I'm pro serial comma, and anyone who isn't is a major lametard.
So how do I rank on your PC scale? Do I get a pass because I pack heat and don't mind porn, or is refraining from "retard" prima facia evidence of inveterate peeceeness? Is any objection to discriminatory speech PC, or is it OK to disapprove of the biggies, like nigger or fag, but any sensitivity beyond that is lefty limp-wristedness?

I see his choice of metaphor as just meant to be extreme, not as an insult to blacks or jews. It doesn't mean he doesn't understand what jews & blacks have suffered, more likely it just about his own strange, maybe deranged, sense of persecution.

If he can't see how a well off white male comparing his (perceived) persecution to the persecution of Jews or Blacks might be taken as offensive, then he is indeed an idiot.

Well OK, but you cited these as her only positive traits.
Sorry that you can't see any good in her, as that reference alone would have taken you off the PC radar.

Well, that only granted a pardon, of sorts, to right-wing wackos. People of left-of-center politics such as myself, or Camile Paglia, are still racists, sexists or homophobes for noting a PC environment.
Well, your comments will be entered into your record, and it will be left to the Council of Elders to make the final determination.

I've read through your stump speech, and I have to say it is inconclusive. The loving response from the liberal peanut gallery indicates you don't have any views particularly upsetting to liberals. Perhaps the Council will look favorably upon your Annie Oakley side.

Again, having all liberal views is not an indictment. But one, only one, juicy conservative view takes you off the hook.

Ducatista wrote:The Big Three of bigotry, racism/sexism/homophobia, make my skin crawl. Interestingly, homophobia most of all, maybe because I can't say "Well, yes, I've experienced those feelings myself."
Nearly all liberals are hostile to such bigotry. Conservatives, less predictably so, but conservatives mostly do not have bad hearts.
The "other forum" I refer to is one that I actually created 10 years ago along with an online friend, this crazy mexican guy from CA. It is a packer football forum, with a politics section where ideas and insults are exchanged. It's skewed very conservative, but some liberals too. It was decided very early on from my (if you can believe it) relatively sensitive nature that I must be gay. Also, I've been passionatle about gay rights for the past 20 years or so. So I am the butt of endless fag and pedophile jokes and references, I've just accepted my role as the homo spokesmodel. I think a few of the people there are genuinely homophobic. Mostly, it is just fun-driven crudeness. My friend of course takes endless mexican slurs. He loves ethnic jokes. He is very beloved because he is funny with the comebacks.

Ducatista wrote: Still use fucktard, lametard, and dicktard, which is probably cheating.
"dicktard" is acceptable only if spoken by a man. you may substitute "cunttard" but I don't recommend it.

Personally, I would like to see "nigger", "fag", "retard" and "cunt" all liberated. But I avoid them because many people think they are hateful.

Well, I approve of everything about you. Except...exept.... we'll have to wait for the Council.

I don't think his purpose in making the statement was to insult blacks or jews. But that doesn't make what he said not insulting to blacks or jews. And it most definitely demonstrates a complete disconnect from the realities experienced by those groups.

Honest question: Is there anyone you won't let off the hook for saying terrible things?

I didn't let the guy off the hook. But I give people a wide berth for crude language, and sometimes for directly racist/sexist quotes (ala Hitchins.) I want to know more about the person, the context of the quote, before I condemn.

I see racism and sexism existing in all of us. But it takes a lot before I condemn somebody as a racist or sexist.

Yes, you did. You said his choice of words was not insulting, seemingly arguing that it should only be construed as such if he meant it to be. That's an indefensible position, IMO.

I find it hard to imagine Ted Nugent has any fucking clue what it's like to actually be persecuted. Don't you? Well, maybe in the '70s he got some mean stares for being a longhair...

Other quotes from Ted over the years I'm now anxious for you to explain the real meaning of:
"...apartheid isn’t that cut-and-dry. All men are not created equal."
"[Deer are] only interested in three things: the best place to eat, having sex, and how quickly they can run away. Much like the French."
"I am Rosa Parks with a Gibson guitar."
"Yeah they love me [in Japan] - they're still assholes. These people they don't know what life is. I don't have a following, they need me, they don't like me they need me... Foreigners are assholes. Foreigners are scum. I don't like 'em. I don't want 'em in this country. I don't want 'em selling me doughnuts. I don't want 'em pumping my gas. I don't want 'em downwind of my life-OK?"

I condemned Ted Nugent strongly. That is not "letting guy off hook."
On specific question of whether blacks or jews should be insulted, I say the intent very much does matter.
If somebody is insulted by it, OK, I get that, but I wouldn't get worked up over it.

OMG. Do you really expect me to parse nutty Ted Nugent quotes and defend them because I saw one narrow aspect of a thuggish quote as less than pure evil?
