Although I'm fundamentally opposed to using public funds to bailout private companies, I realize and accept that there are times when it is necessary to do so. Thankfully, it seems likely that the TARP funds will eventually be recovered in full. The Treasury just reported a profit on their AIG bailout.

The monetary gain/loss of the bailouts is irrelevant. What matters is what has the government done to restructure these industries via regulation to make sure TBTF doesn't happen again?

Its the moral hazard that's important, not the money.

I couldn't agree more, though I'm somewhat surprised that you're calling for additional regulation.

I'm not even sure it's a moral hazard issue. I think it's a practical hazard.

If they got away with it once, you know they'll try it again.

What we need is legislation against things getting too big to fail, and no president of either party is going to touch that with a ten foot pole given the amount of donations at stake.
