I got my spade from the back room of the (now defunct) Maple Tree Antique Mall over ten years ago for a couple bucks. No idea how old it already was at that time. It's still going strong and doesn't look any different from when I got it, despite very casual care and year round use (still gotta turn the compost in the winter and chop thru ice). It's definitely heavier than similar shovels I see at the stores, and made to last. I got my metal rake at Ace hardware around the same time, and it's also still just fine, although the paint flaked off long ago from the handle. Both tools are wood and metal only, I think that's the key. If you don't want to shell out for pretty and new ones, I bet you can find plenty of tools with lots of life left in them at estate and garage sales.
