Madison and the 2016 Olympics

If it's news, but not politics, then it goes here.

Madison and the 2016 Olympics

Postby Ned Flounders » Thu Apr 09, 2009 10:39 am

Doyle is lobbying the IOC in support of Chicago's bid for the 2016 summer Olympics.

Apparently, if Chicago is selected, at least a couple of the events might be around here:

Events in the Madison area would include road racing on a course from the UW-Madison campus to Blue Mounds State Park and mountain bking at Tyrol Basin ski area.

An Olympic bike race starting in downtown Madison would be cool.

Maybe I could charge people $20 to park in my driveway...

I can't think of a worse idea than bringing the Olympics to Madison. We're WAY too small to make changes to accomodate a giant crowd, which then will disappear.

Set sites on Special Olympics - OBama might even agree to make opening address.

Though I believe you are a troll, I'll link you to a Republican defending Mr. President.

We have had the Iron Man here, why not a few Olympic events. We are not talking about the whole Olympic epicenter here for Pete's sake.
You really think this is the worst idea?
I think your little April 15th "Tea Party" is the dumbest thing to come to Madison since the Klan wanted to rally here. Birds of a feather I guess.
Bring on the Olympics and let the "free market" decide!

Why are you talking about republicans and tea parties?
Where am I?

I was not interested in the topic enough to read the proposal, so if it was just an event or two, sure that makes sense, sorry for not performing my due diligence.

As I mentioned in the very brief note that started this thread, they're proposing having a couple of events in the Madison area, with Chicago as the main site.

We would get a road bike race (downtown Madison to Blue Mounds) and some mountain biking at Tyrol Basin.

Maybe I'm overly optimistic, but I expect Madison could probably handle that.

Let's build a Velodrome! Would be way cool...and make Madison "Bike-City, USA"! Could drop it into the lanquishing central park.

Granted, the Pan-American games are olympics, jr., but when Indianapolis hosted in the late '80's it really gave the city a much needed face-lift. And a temporary crown as Amateur Sports Capital, USA.

Second!

That would be beyond cool.

There used to be one in one of the Chicago suburbs, so they'd probably use that first. But a velodrome would be awesome.

Imagine bringing back an event like the 6 day races.

I would love to see some of the off road events. Fingers crossed.

There's a velodrome in Kenosha.
