What are they selling? Store manequins and lights? Hallway carpeting? Or are they selling the Mall ownership?

They are selling the whole damn thing (I suggest reading the linked article).

I'll bid a dollar, but that probably won't meet the reserve price.

I tell you, the mall is on its way to going upscale. They already have a store for baby shower presents. If Freed could have held out for the grand opening of the House Of Dumplings, I'm sure he could have made his nut in a matter of months.

Seriously, though, what that place is worth is pretty much a function of how much rent they can charge. If the place is underwater, then Freed walks. From what I've read, Freed is concentrating on trying to hold on to some larger investments in Chicago.

I did read the 3 line article but had no idea what a sheriff sale was or what exactly was for sale. I thought mall sales and foreclosures were handled differently. Why so grumpy?

That article sucked. I had to Google Sheriff's Sale as well.

See, just like every other elected official in this state, the sheriff is for sale... Or maybe he's on sale, so you can buy him cheap now through Sunday...

I've had no clue from the start of this conversation what precisely was going to be up for sale, and had no reason to assume a "sheriff's sale" was for an entire property.

I was always taught that informative writing should be written as if the audience doesn't know anything about what you're discussing. These articles have not held to that principle. Henry, you're not being very charitable or patient.

Foreclosure and sheriff's sale are not obscure terms.

To anyone who's never dealt with them they are. Both are legal jargon. Most people have a general idea of what foreclosure means (although I imagine most are fuzzy on specifics, particularly given there are several kinds) but I've never encountered the term "sheriff's sale" before and a Wikipedia search just redirects you to "Public auction," which suggests to me it's not nearly as common as you think.

I'd think a teacher would encourage people to ask questions when they don't understand instead of deflecting their interest with snark.

The sheriff's department holds an auction to sell foreclosed property. 9 times out of 10 the bank bids exactly what it's owed and gets the property, then turning it over to a real estate company to sell.

Which brings us to the really important issue here, poor Bank of America ): They stand to lose 50 million dollars here. There must be some way the good people of this country can step in and make sure that doesn't happen. Hmmm..

I don't care for malls much, but Hilldale is the only decent one in town, if you ask me.

There's some sort of lesson there. We like the Flat Top, the Dane, and we've been to Sundance several times but every time we wander through that mall we don't see anything else that interests us enough to make a purchase. I think my wife bought a watch from Kubly. That's about it.
