? whence Allan H. Selig Chair in History ?

What are the things that puzzle, enrage, delight and tickle you as you go about your life in Madison?

? whence Allan H. Selig Chair in History ?

Postby Big_Sister » Sat Sep 25, 2010 4:30 pm

I read with great interest about a month ago about the establishment here at the UW of the endowed "Allan H. Selig Chair in History", and then the topic seemed to disappear from local, public, mainstream media.

I am a local "civilian" (ie, non-UW affiliated resident) who is very curious about the fact and the process.

Is there anywhere online that I can follow the search and selection process?

Thanks to anyone who can help.

I think you mean "whither," not "whence." We know whence--from the Budster.

It takes several years to turn a donation like Selig's into an actual historian sitting in an office in Humanities. Selig's donation has to be turned into an endowment at the UW Foundation, then the History department has to work with Selig to lay out the job duties (an endowed chair like this may have extra duties, or a different combination of research and teaching than normal), then they have to run a search. The search alone takes a year, and if there are no suitable candidates, they may have to do more than one search. It is possible that they could have someone in the position next fall, but it's more likely that it won't happen until 2012 or 2013.

The chair "will focus on the relationship between sports and society from 1900 to the present."

Thanks for your explanation, Detritus. It's helpful.

As for whence v. whither, you make a good point. I was fuzzy with my antecedent(s).

How about rephrasing to "whither the chair and/or whence the person to fill the chair?"
