Kelda Roys negative campaign

Postby Stu Levitan » Tue Jul 24, 2012 1:07 pm

This is a nasty ad. I don't think it will be effective. Dem primary electorate is pretty savy, and is familiar with Mark Pocan's record, which certainly isn't based on caving in to right-wingers.

I didn't think it was that nasty. Negative yes, but not to the level of nasty. I think the Repub. primary for senate is much nastier.

Is it an indication that she's pretty far behind?

Pocan's own ad is well done, I think. It also resembles Ron Johnson's ad where he inspects factory machines with his employees. That shot where you see the candidate through the machinery is always good! I think it's clearly better than the Roys ads where she's talking straight to the camera.

It is an interesting strategy. As Stu pointed out, the traditional primary voter tends to be more engaged than voters in a general election. However, this ad isn't aimed at the normal primary voter, this ad is targeting the giant mass of occasional voters who went into the booth for the recall and are still sore about the results. I don't like the tone of the ad but I can see the strategy behind it.

Will utilizing recall wounds increase turnout? Will Kelda be able to afford color photos in future ads? I don't know.

Bear in mind that I am out of the district, so will not be voting for either one. However, I find myself in agreement with Stu. This is nasty and kind of misleading. Mr Pocan is not a pushover. He does not generally cave to the right. What he is, is pragmatic and normally level headed and reasonable.

I heard Ms Roys try to distinqush herself from Marc earlier by saying that he caved and that she never would. In my opinion this is exactly what we do not need. It is that same steadfastness for which the tea party has been lambasted.

The truth is that the general populace is a diverse group with differing needs and points of view that are in different stages of life. Therefore, it is NOT prudent to be rigid in one's viewpoint as would seem to be the case with Kelda if one really wants to be a representative of ALL the people.

We do need representatives that will work with others. That does involve listening and sometimes compromise. Marc is such a person and Kelda is not.

Is she doing this out of desperation? Probably.

Will it increase turnout? I don't think so, but only because Madison had really high turnout in the past two election cycles.

Might be interesting to see which corporate giveaways Ms. Roys voted for over the years. They are a truly bipartisan thing, and there were plenty of them enacted under Doyle.

Poor judgement.

Also, (go to 5:30 here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbzuoI_6 ... =endscreen) does anyone know why Kelda Helen thought all her colleagues want to be in the examination room with her when she gets her annual Pap smear test?

Seems a little presumptuous and even grandiose, to say the least, Helen.

My letter to Kelda:

Kelda
I am very disappointed in your new attack ad on Pocan. The first and last lines are offensive. You are running for the seat once held by Bob La Follette and Bob Kastenmeier; your campaign is unbecoming of this district.
I am really sorry,

They are? "What do we really know about Mark Pocan?" and "It's time to say 'no' to Mark Pocan"? How is that offensive?

Here's what's offensive: Helen Kelda Roys offered an amendment to
Assembly Bill 371 that would have required every man wanting to abort his baby to undergo a rectal exam. Or something like that.

The words "offensive" and "offend" are over used and rarely accurate.

Oops, I think there's a typo there. It looks like you're calling me "Helen." My name's Kyle, but "thebookpolice" is fine in this venue.

Exactly. Also, the word "nasty".

Is Stu really as thin-skinned as he appears?
