Songs that make you go hmmm...

How can cultural elitists like ourselves put TV in the Culture category? Well, where the hell else is it going to fit?

the commercial played the song up until "oooh that red white and blue" and then cut it off, completely inverting the message of the song.

Ah, yes. I remember that one now. That always stuck out for me, too.

And blunt, while I appreciate your frustration, I think the idea of this thread was the ironic commercial ditty, not the infuriatingly obnoxious commercial ditty.

Remember when Reagan wanted to use "Born in the U.S.A." for his presidential campaign?

Springsteen turned him down (with a chuckle).

You think I start at the beginning and actually read other people's posts?

Well, no. That's why I posted what I did. I are helpful.

I've been hearing New Order's "Age of Consent" a lot lately, for AT&T wireless. That one doesn't bug me, though.

I buried this in another thread somewhere: it was trippy hearing Afrika Bambaataa's "Looking for the Perfect Beat" in a Visa commercial. The Visa card pictured at the end of the ad was translucent red, just like the vinyl of my 12" single of "Looking."

'83 was a great year for music.

Violent Femme's "Blister in the Sun" for... Wendy's?

Seems VF bassist Brian Ritchie also said WTF.

Bassist Brian Ritchie sued lead vocalist Gordon Gano on Wednesday, saying he was deprived of credit for some of the group's songs and a proper accounting of its earnings.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, also accuses Gano of trashing the band's reputation by allowing its signature hit, "Blister in the Sun," to be used in a Wendy's commercial.
...

The Wendy's deal was a buzz-kill for the band's fan base, the suit says, causing one fan to comment in an online blog that after hearing "Blister in the Sun" in a commercial, "My ears perked up. Then my jaw dropped. Then my heart sank."

On a side note, when my dad sold his house in Whitefish Bay and moved to Arizona, Ritchie bought it. He was the hit at the annual neighborhood picnic, bringing his guitar and playing, but I don't think he covered "Blister".
